next gen consoles

Yes, but designs and manufacturing have to be in place well before release.

I know that, they get to know about chips before we do. Only thing is relying on foundries not to balls it up. So they tend to prefer things made on mature nodes which can be shrunk later for slim models.

If they set a price of say £800 for the "ultra" console, you could have quite a chip in there.

None of this has anything to do with Nvidia, but of course that wont stop you from trying to turn it into an anti-Nvidia talking point anyway.

High price driving people away, people start to take more interest in consoles, wonder what consoles have coming next.

Emmm yeah it does have a lot to do with High GPU prices.

Nobody is talking about switching from PC gaming to console gaming just because of Nvidia.

What a pathetic argument and you know it. But you just cant help yourself.

It's not an argument? eh? It's just a point. High GPU prices can drive people to consoles. Has done my mate, he was all excited about getting into PC gaming and 1440p but was put off by the high GPU prices.

I don't think there would be as much "interest" in consoles had GPU prices not been so high.

The amount of systems I have built for friends who have come away from console gaming disagree's with you.

I do expect these consoles to be abit more than what ps4 and xbone launched for. What was it here 430 - 450 for xbone and cnt remember ps4 but probs about 399.

I can see these new consoles being around 500 quid.

Also we dont even know the setup of the consoles yet. APU? Or dedicated CPU/gpu. Kinda naive to assume they can just bang in something like a 8 TF gpu and be able to keep something like that cool in a very small form factor and not too noisey.

Erm yes they are very small form factors. They are similar if not smaller than mini itx cases and they are basically pc hardware. We can all assume they are not going to be getting much bigger because of the response they got on release especially the xbone. So still stands. Ifu think they can bang in much more than 6TF of gpu horsepower andkeep it all cool as well as a beefier CPU u must be dreamin.

Actually the prices are coming down year by year, relative to console performance that is.

To put it another way, the cost of driving a 1080p/60fps experience has been falling consistently year by year, and in a few months time when AMD and Nvidia release their mainstream cards, the price of PC gaming will be at a significant all time low.

The thing is if there are generation 1.5 consoles with much better GPUs in them,it can only be positive for the PC versions of the games,as there would be more impetus to push effects.

Yep can't be sure on the Xboxone/Scorpio but the ps4/4.5 games will still come on the same disc so all the games will be targeting the higher end one. All you do when you stick in the Disc is select which Ps4 version you have and start playing.

this - the min they have to do is play on PS4 - but they will used that other power with PS4.5 for sure

Meh, ultra settings vs medium kills performance. If they are targeting 4k there is actually not likely to be any more effects being used. It's going to be a straight up 1080p cheap console, 4k expensive console but the same look and the same games. We might/should get devs doing higher quality textures for 4k which will make a difference but I don't think they'll be attempting to do much more performance expensive effects on the 4k Xbox. 1.3TF to 6TF to go from borderline 1080p performance to good 4k performance is all there is. That would also enable 1080p with much higher settings, but 6TF isn't going to bring around 4k AND higher settings.

This is a really good interview to read for an insight into Microsoft's vision for "Scorpio":-

What most suprised me is the fact unless you hook this thing up to 4K, games will run just like on Xboner and you arent going to get any improved frame rates at lower resolutions.

I cant really see this thing pushing 4K and 60FPS? maybe I am wrong but the stated 6 TFlops doesnt seem like enough when more powerful current GPU's such as the 1080 wont keep that frame rate at 4K....

Soon after that, he clarified and said that devs will be able to use the power however they wish. Clearly though, if a dev *does* target 4k natively, then performance enhancements will be minor at best(taking a sub 30fps game to a solid 30fps maybe).

I would not be surprised to see certain developers go with 1080p/60fps but with really good IQ either via MSAA or supersampling. After all, that will benefit more consumers than those just with 4k TV's.

Yeah it'd be much more sensible for them to go for 1080p60 with ultra-settings and some AA, rather than 4K30.

6 Tflops should be able to do that, especially factoring in extra optimisation for it being a console. I wouldn't be surprised if the scorpio ends up being comparable to a stock GTX 1080 on PC (or a tiny bit slower, again factoring in console optimisation).
