next gen in summer or autumn?

No idea yet, Nvidia's got 55nm 8800's coming in July, and AMD's R700 is supposedly July as well, but theres talk of those not being next gen either, supposedly based on R600 still.

ATI release the new R700/770 from June 2008 and Nividia release new next 9900 from July and then from 2009 ATI release new R800 and Nvidia will do the same with next card from late 2009 so it up to you to buy this year or wait until after Xmas - I bought 2xGF9600GT XXX (SLI) and keep it until 2010 or later for next new card.

Late july mid august. There was a problem recently with a prototype, ill try and find the link but it was put back 2 weeks, this is nvidia i dont follow ati

Like they have said ^

However, these cards are not strictly speaking next gen either, there still building on existing tech. Although, more of a jump than the 88-98 series we hope :).

Apparantly nvidia have yet another dual chip card on the way, running a 55nm version of the current 9800GX2. So, expect a smaller, faster and more efficient 9800GX2 (9900GX2 possibly), but not night and day quicker. Same goes for a supposed 9900GTX, a shrunk down 9800GTX, with quicker clocks. I dont think we will see a proper new part from nvidia till end of the year.

As far as ATI go, R700 may not be as brilliant as its being hyped to be, but then, all of this is just rumour, it should still be a very capable part. But again, its building on R670, which in turn, built on R600 so thats still not a truly new part.

Then again, all this building upon and improving is what has went on for years, the drivers have as big a say in this stuff as the parts them self. The market it seems wont be satisfied, untill crysis is absolutley desimated by a card that is affordable to the masses (as in sub £200).

As for when, as the OP stated, 'proper next gen' parts are out. Not any time soon.

You know I wouldnt put it past them ^^^^. But hey, perhaps if there moving to GDDR5 that wont be so much of an issue. Cant quite remember when I read it, but apparantly, R730 (I think), is going to be a 128bit card, however, as it is meant to be GDDR5, its the equivilent of a GDDR3 card with a 256bit interface (ala 3870). Sooooooooo, not all bad really.

Want to see some monsterous GDDR5 card with a 512 bit interface so I can laugh in the face of crysis xD lol
