Just out of interest, does anyone know if there are going to be any monitors released in the near future which will represent a big jump in quality and technology. I only say so because some of the leading monitors around right now are a few years old (dell, benq 24''). Im particually interested in the 24'' market.

Im aware of the recent develepment in OLED, but from what I gather that is going to be a fair while before it becomes a standard.

Thanks.

None of the leading monitors around now are a few years old... few are even 10 months old.

The one i'm interested in most at the moment is the soon to be release Dell 3008WFP (30") as it can apparently do 117% NTSC colour gamut (most monitors can only do 75 - 80%) and has DisplayPort connection which is meant to replace DVI/VGA.
3008 Thread.

Interestingly I was about to buy a Dell XPS laptop the other day and happened to see a YouTube review of it where the dude said that sometime in 2008 Dell is gonna give its XPS laptops a makeover - and of one of them was giving the laptop screens LED backlights (along with bumping up their res). So I might hang tight till then hee hee.

I dont understand what that has to do with this thread? lol

But you have a point about LED lighting... There are already some monitors (and laptops) out that use LED backlighting, but they're very expensive.
But to answer unclebob's original question, then the next big things would be LED backlit monitors (they have better colour reproduction and perfectly even lighting across the screen) and 10 and 12-bit monitors.

So what for instance, would you say are the best 3 24'' panels, regardless of price?

I'm not so up to date with 24" monitors these days, i know the Dell 2407's are good. But theres a new 24" Dell coming out this year, probably called the 2408.

2408.

LED will be the next best thing however not this year. WG-CCFL's have reached LED gamut levels, unless 120% isnt good enough going LED will only give you a couple more % (plus even backlight) for more than double the cost. There are not enough manufacturers producing LED panels, LED IPS panels of 20" and above will be mass produced in Q3/Q4 at the earliest.

Current samsung XL24 is $2500 and the XL30 $3999, availability end of this month, and if they feature S-PVA LCD modules well the LED doesnt exactly fix the associated issues.

$2500-$4000 for a S-PVA based monitor, dont make me laugh...

I'm actually more interested to know when 3D monitors will become standard, Sharp have been doing them since 2003 so they shouldn't be too far off right?
