Next generation cards from AMD and Nvidia

Given Nvidia's misrepresentation of the specification of the GTX 970, I'm thinking of cancelling my pre-order of an OcUK reference 970 and waiting for the next generation of cards to come out.

I'd obviously be most interested in the next generation of AMD GPUs. The last I heard, the next-gen Radeon CPUs had slipped to Summer 2015.

As I understand it, Nvidia have 8GB 970s and 980s in the pipeline. The last I heard, the 8GB cards were due for release in March 2015. Despite my dissatisfaction with Nvidia, an 8GB GTX 970 could be quite interesting as it would presumably be 7+1GB rather than 3.5+0.5GB. Does anyone know when the GM200 GPUs are due to be released?

Could anyone point me to better information on AMD and Nvidia's road maps?

Why not just change your order to a 290X from OcUK now? They are the same price as the 970 and you will get 512Bit of 4GB memory or even go for the 290X 8GB version.

As for the next iteration of cards, Later in the year is the best I can give.

The 3XX cards are coming from AMD in May-June time. Nvidia might launch a 960Ti in the summer. I'd expect 10XX from Nvidia or whatever they decide to call them in early 2016, probably higher clocked versions of their current cards.

I've been paying so little attention to AMD I didn't even realise there was a 290X as well as a 290. The 290X cards do look very interesting for the same price as a GTX 970. Is it worth considering the 8GB cards? The gap between the most expensive 4GB card and the cheapest 8GB card is only £20 at OcUK.

I assumed you wanted as much VRAM as possible and this is why I said the 290X 8GB. I would certainly go that route, as that then opens the door for 4K gaming but be aware, for decent settings at 4K, you will need 2 as a total bare minimum and ideally 3 to get the most out of the extra 4GB.

If you are in no rush, June someone said for the 380X?

I would be surprised if NVIDIA did not release faster cards very soon after AMD's 3XX.

Funnily enough even if they release the Maxwell GM200 GPU with the specs of last generations 780Ti it would still be a reasonable performance boost as the specs of the 980 are low compared to GK110 cards but a lot more efficient. They could release a new flagship card without breaking a sweat.

Thanks for the replies. I eventually decided to change my pre-order for a 970 to a 980. While it's galling to spend even more money with NVIDIA, I didn't want to risk regretting buying a 970 in 12 months' time. I took a very close look at the AMD 290X, but decided the 980 suits my needs better. I don't have any immediate plans to go 4K. I was looking for a card with enough headroom to cope with future games.
