Looking to refresh the pc and just want a heads up on we're at. The 980/970 seem to be th current top end cards excluding the Titan. When are they due to be replaced I don't really like buying top end cards 6months before they due to be replaced as its bad value how far into their life cycle are these cards ?

The 980 is not top end anymore. The gtx 980ti and AMD FuryX are now the next ones down after TitanX.

New cards will always be no more than a year away since amd/Nvidia release a handful of months apart and have something like an 18 month product cycle.
If you keep waiting on a new release, you will be forever waiting. If you need a new card now, buy a card now, if not wait for the next gen but i wouldn't wait on next gen with the idea that waiting for a new release will get you more bang for buck since you will play the early adoption premiums.
Buy now or buy later, its all swings and round abouts but your decision should be based on what you currently have/do not have rather than what might come out.
