This News.com story reports that Microsoft is planning to release its next major revision of Windows in around three years. According to the story, citing unnamed sources coming from a Microsoft sales meeting, the new version, which is currently known simply by "7", will once again be released in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame. Windows Vista was released over five years after the release of Windows XP but "7" will be a part of a more regular release schedule.
Windows 7 was previously known by the code name Vienna. A Microsoft representative confirmed that Windows 7 is the internal code name for the next client release of Windows. The details were released "as part of our ongoing outreach to enterprise customers and partners, Microsoft has begun sharing plans for how they will continue to deliver value to businesses in the future…Software Assurance customers in particular," a representative said in a statement via e-mail. ​

By then I would say the majority would be on 64bit systems considering its a hard job to find a system from the likes of Dell and the purple shirt land etc that arent using 64bit oem chips

Plus the fact 64bit software might start becoming the norm by then, you would hope
 
The next Windows server OS will be all 64bit, that much has been confirmed :) So if they share the same code base then only a 64bit desktop version is a possibility?
 
I doubt we'll see the next MS OS for a few years yet. They've spent ages on Vista and will want to get some revenue from it. It's going to be a while before they can get most people to switch to Vista from XP.

I'm going to stay with XP for a good while yet, unless I can get a very, very good price considering I am a student. So I can't see my getting Vista for at least 18 months, if not two years or more. XP does what I need it to and I know that all my games/hardware/programs work on XP. I know that I cannot say the same for Vista. I'll probably have to get new printers and scanners etc to get Vista compatible drivers as I cannot see Canon making Vista drivers for what are now quite old products. So I'll have to spend a bit on new hardware to get them working with Vista. That ain't gonna happen for a while yet.

Wikipedia says that in June 2007 XP had nearly 82% of the market and Vista not even 5%.

Windows Vienna, the codename for the next Windows OS isn't out until 2009 at the earliest or 2012 at the latest. I'd go for the later one myself.

Not forgetting that 3 years was always the standard interval between major releases till Vista was delayed.
 
Yeah about 5 years between XP and Vista? Potentially if Vienna is out in 2009 then Vista won't have been out for more than 2.5 years. So unless MS can make Vienna so much better than XP and Vista that everyone just HAS to buy Vienna I really can't see Vista being culled so early.
 
Wikipedia says a lot of things - however anything that can be editted by anyone is never going to be the "be all and end all" of information.
MS's own sales figures would indicate a far bigger adoption of Vista than a lot of places would like you to believe.

As for the information on "Vienna" in the original post.
It's telling us nothing we didn't already now (which is very little).
It's almost certainly talking rubbish as MS hope to have everyone over to 64bit before the next OS appears, meaning it is highly unlikely the next OS will appear in 32bit versions.
Subscription based systems are almost certainly going to be highly featured.

Remember Vista was delayed a million times. Three years seems like a realistic target. XP came out 2002(or whenever) There was Windows 2000 and Win98 before then. So two to three years is fairly standard for MS.

Vista was very delayed; they never intended there to be a five year gap between it and XP. Steve Ballmer has said that the next Windows release will not take as long.

All claims on wikipedia must have sources or they will be deleted, and wikipedia was proved to be more accurate than britannica actually. :p

They will. XP was a bit flaky when it was first released, but service packs and multiple updates soon sorted that.

In 3 years Vista will be very good, pretty much in the same league as XP is right now.

I don't know what's so hilarious about them releasing another OS? It's a pretty standard road-map, and don't forget, it's not like the entirety of Microsoft have dropped Vista and are working on Vienna. For now it'll only be an intimate development team outlining the Vienna project. :)
 
Will XP be around in 2009 / 2010? It eould nosurprise me if there were lots of people staying with XP at least until next yesr. After that then people might just think to wait for Vienna and not go with Vista at all.

If M$ gets Vienna right and there are plenty of drivers and are all 64 bit, I reckon Vista will have been a bit of a flop.
