So currently I have...
MSI B350M Gaming motherboard
Ryzen 5 5600X Processor
Corsair 32GB 3000 DDR4 ram
Geoforce 1070TI
M.2 500gb sata
suitable power supply (cannot remember the make it's basic but voltages hold just fine and enough power).

What would be the next cheapest upgrade path for gaming? Thinking NVME would make a lot of sense, but is my motherboard holding me back? How much would it cost me to upgrade to something that gets better performance out of my current components?

I’d consider a motherboard upgrade to gain PCI-E 4.0, something like a B550, a bigger NVME drive, Gen 4 ones are finally coming down in price and you can find 1TB ones for around £100-£110 now. Then look at your graphics card but that’s going to be the big expense. Keep an eye out for a 3060ti or 3070 FE on the alert sites and discords.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £220.44 (includes delivery: £10.50)

Do you need more storage, What m2 drive do you Have ?
Cannot remember off the top of my head, it definitely is not NVME so sata speeds... 500gb so I would probably upgrade to a 1tb evo970 or whatever it is... Pretty sure this is a bottleneck right now but I do feel something else is holding my system back. I do play DCS and I feel the framerate is not as good as it could be...

Yeah I do wonder if PCI-E 3.0? is a limiting factor... Would a 3060ti be a big increase over my 1070TI?

All you need is a better gpu and that can be expensive. You can upgrade your storage but will not make massive difference.

I had a 1080, which is pretty much the same performance as your 1070ti, and upgraded to a RX 6800 and it was worthwhile for me. If i was you I would be looking to double gpu power so something like a 3070ti , 3080 or 6800/6800xt. If you went with a 3060ti then it would be a large increase in your gpu power but not a 100% uplift like a 3080 would be.

Which gpu you go for is down to what res and monitor you are gaming on. If you are using a 1080p screen then you are fine as you are.

I doubt it's the m2 affecting fps

@MissChief makes a very good point about changing to a b550 motherboard.

1080 on screen but I have VR which is where I would like to see more performance, so more GPU would make sense!

A faster M.2 drive could make load times faster. It is a cheap easy drop in upgrade so is something to consider.

I personally would not think about changing the mobo. I assume you have watched HWunboxed video on cpu performance on older B550/x370 mobos? They get pretty decent performance in terms of fps so I doubt the mobo is limiting by much if any.

PCIe 3 drives are very very fast and is hard to tell them apart from a PCIe 4 drives in side to side systems. Linus did a video on this a couple of years ago with SATA drives thrown in as well and most people could not notice a difference.

For VR 3080 or wait till the end of the year and new gpus. VR is an expensive way to game, thread around with guy trying to play MSFS in VR so lot of relevant info in there for you to see.

I'm 100% with Haz123 on this. DO not bother upgrading the motherboard.

As long as you're getting the full 16x PCI-e 3.0 bandwidth, you'll be fine.

Upgrade to a 3060ti or 3070. The rest of your system is fine.

Maaaaaaybe a new SSD if you really need but can't really go wrong with a new GPU.

Not worth spending £100 just to get pcie 4.0 support. It won't make the slightest difference for the gpu and Gen 4 isn't any better currently for the SSD until direct storage is a thing. Also that SSD is overpriced considering you could get the Crucial P5P 1TB for £3 more.

If Gen 4 support isn’t a requirement, and I was considering any future options that might require Gen 4 then a B450 tomahawk would be the preferred option, or OP could just keep what he has and upgrade elsewhere.

The B450 chipset only supports Gen 3 same as B350, so not really any benefit doing that.

Honestly the only thing that would make a visible difference is GPU. Upgrading the ssd to an nvme drive would definitely decrease load times, but aside from that if you want to improve gaming performance then GPU is the way to go

In general it doesnt make any real difference if you use an Nv or AMD gpu with an Intel or AMD cpu/mobo combo. They all work equally well with each other and resizeable bar and SAM all work as expected, if you do not know what they are it isnt a problem , just a small feature that gives advantages and sometimes disadvantages in certain situations. This is an area that AMD/Intel/Nv could have tried to lock people into a certain platform but they have all played nicely and made these generic features for all and is indictative of cooperation across this part of the industry.

You should look at benchmarks for the specific games you play most often and then decide on the best gpu within your budget for your circumstances. If VR is a major use case then NV currently has an advantage but if you wait for the next gen we have no real idea who will be better

I suppose the final question would be, would I benefit better from an AMD GPU given my AMD setup or will it not make any real difference?
Given that AMD have their new technology to upsample games, it doesn’t make a difference.

Thankfully, both Nvidia and AMD mostly have good products out these days so unless you go out of your way to buy a turd, you’re not making a bad choice.
