I know the CPU is bone but should get you gaming to start and when you can afford you can drop something faster in like a 3570k and have a much better rig.
seems the easiest thing to change and the old cpu will sell on fleabay for about what your going to pay so as i see it minimum loss.
This is assuming you intend to have additional upgrade stages come payday, if your looking at final rig from your £500 say so as i would go another way

I agree with the M4 and 7850 though, with maybe an i3 2120.

Well if its a phased build this gets him up and running with only the CPU to upgrade, if you cheep out on a couple of components then its more to swap out in the long run.
Like i said if this is the last £500 he's putting into the pc the spec i've linked isnt the way to go as its gimped by the CPU i'm expecting him to upgrade on payday.
phase 3 would be better cpu mass storage drive and a nice after market cooler if he's overclocking

I read the OP that he has a final £500 to spend to complete the rig, but we shall see!
