Can anyone help. I have an AMD 4000+ which runs at 2.6 on air. I am looking to take the next step and am wondering if an Opteron 148 (running at 2.8/3.0) will be worth it. I am only looking to spend say £200 on a new CPU. Should I wait and save some more dosh? Would one of the oter Opterons be worth looking at?

The rest of the specs are:

Asus AN8-SLI Premium Motherboard
Corsair XMS4400 Twinax 512mb x2 (1GB) Memory
XFX 7800GTX 256MB Video
1 x Western Digital 76GB Raptor Hard Drive
4 x Hitachi Deskstar 400GB Hard Drives (in Raid 5)
1 x Plextor DVD writer
1 x Sony DVD writer
Thermalright XP120 CPU cooler with 120mm Panaflo fan.
4 x additional 120mm Panaflo fans in case
Antec P180 case
MS Bio keyboard
Logitech Laser 1000 mouse
2 x Dell 2405 24" monitors
AMD 4000+ Newcastle CPU

What I really want to know is what performance improvement I will see by changing the CPU without going the FX57 route!

I would save another 100 and get an opty 170 dual core.

TBH this cpu (if you get a good stepping) is fantastic. As I type this on my laptop I am priming on my main rig at 2.7ghz on stock vcore of 1.3v on air!

currently 3hrs in

The opty dual cores are the business :D
