next step up from a gtx 260

hi all, i have a friend with a gtx 260 and he has asked me to find out what would be the next best card, around for around the £200 mark.

hes not bothered weather its nvidia or ati

he only games on a 17" @1280x1024 at the moment but will be getting a 22" or 24" shortly

Well, next step could be said to be the 275gtx but for noticeable performance gains I'd look at either a 5850 or a cheap second hand 4870X2.

I'vwe just gone from a GTX260 to a 5850 in the system in me sig below, deffo worth it imo.

Went from a GTX260 to a 5850, no noticeable improvement in anything other than Crysis. That's at 1920x1200.

What games does he find the 260 struggling with?

he won't see much improvement at his current res, but he will if/when he upgrades to a 22" or 24" screen. I saw quite significant gains in all games at 1680 x 1050 especially in things like "COH: opposing fronts".

Indeed. As there's no discernable difference at his current resolution, the better upgrade path would be monitor -> GPU, rather than the other way round.

not sure why he's not happy with the 260 but i know he likes to play crysis quite a bit. after looking I'm tempted to get a 5850 myself as I'm still on a 9800gt
