NEXT UPGRADE.....?

Very similar setup to me (i3 540 / HD 6870)

I am waiting for Ivybridge as my next upgrade. I too thought about getting a second hand i5 750/760 or i7 860/870 but decided to wait.

I reckon with ivybridge and maybe picking up another 6870 for crossfire would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Or sell the 6870 and I may buy a 7870 if it offers reasonable performance improvement over the 6870. Don't really game much any more.

What increases will you get from Ivy Bridge motherboard?

Do you mean waiting for a Ivybridge CPU?, or a Z77 board which has native USB3.0 support and I cant even remember the other differences over a Z68 board as they are very much the same thing.

Which 850w?

You can almost keep everything you currently have,

YOUR BASKET

1 x XFX HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £139.99
1 x Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £122.98

Re-use the,

RAM

Crossfire your 6870 with another.

Food for thought.

OCZ game extreme 850w

Looks like a decent PSU based on this review - should be fine for Crossfire HD 6870s or a single high-end GPU.

The upgrade spec Stulid puts forward is a good one - really nice kit there ( good quality, high performance, good value for money and has a nice upgrade path).

Alternatively you could keep you H55 board and replace the CPU with a second-hand i5 750 or 760 (for ~£80) and change your graphics card to single faster card (like a HD 7950 3GB).

The other option is the CPU/Board upgrade.

Sell your 6870 and put that money along with the money not spent from the £600 getting the CPU/board and buying a single fast GFX card.
