It didn't take long before Microsoft's ownership of in-game advertising network Massive has opened a few doors and the company has landed its first game deals with gaming giant Electronic Arts Games (EA).

The Xbox and PC versions of four new EA game releases will have Massive software included in them, which means that Massive can serve advertising into relevant gameplay spots inside the game with adverts changing on a daily or even hourly basis, and including video, graphics and text.

But at the same time, Electronic Arts is spreading the advertising workload and has also announced a deal with IGA Worldwide, another in-game ad network, which will serve ads to Battlefield 2142, developed by Dice in Sweden. At least two further EA titles will be built to use ads serving through IGA.

The first game to take advertising from Massive is Need for Speed, Carbon, the newest title from the best-selling Need For Speed franchise, which was developed at EA Black Box in Vancouver, Canada.

EA has sold static ads in the previous versions of its games, but these have the disadvantage of only being able to be sold once and only to one advertiser, and they cannot support subsequent, time-based ad campaigns. The new versions will have both static and dynamic advertising.

The conversion of EA, the highest earning game producer in the world, not counting the games platform companies themselves Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, means the gaming community has truly accepted in game advertising. Gamers may not all universally be happy with the adverts, but EA must be convinced that it will not put them off buying its games.

The big names that have yet to follow are Sony and Nintendo, neither of which has made a single public move towards building or acquiring an ad serving network. Sony exerts an iron grip on its games, and may be deterring games designers from going down the ad serving route, in an attempt to differentiate its game experience from Microsoft's.

However, it may be that both Sony and Nintendo are listening too intently to the purists in Japan, and are leaving an anticipated move into in-game advertising too late.

"The agreement with Massive is a first step in a detailed strategy for serving advertising in a seamless format that doesn't disrupt game play," EA vice president of online commerce Chip Lange said. "In places like a basketball court, football stadium or roadside in a racing game, advertising is not only nice to have, but it's an essential component to create the fiction of being there.

"This agreement with Massive allows us to vary what relevant ads are served to the game player."

EA posted last year revenue of $2.95bn and has had 27 titles which have sold more than a million copies.

Well if I were forced to choose between PS3s Gran Turismo method of purchasing most tracks and cars with REAL money, or going with ads, I would rather go with the ads. But isn't this getting a little ridiculous? Its not like the NFS series needs a boost in cashflow.

Another example of EA's greed, anyone else seen there profits for the last few years? Well I for one wont be buying any games with dynamic advertisements in them from EA or anyone else, which by the sounds of it means I wont be buying many EA games in the future. I have already paid for the game and I think its sheer cheek to then force ads onto me. Whilst they might not be intrusive at the moment give it a few years and they will be slowing loading times deliberatly to cram more adverts in.

Not only that but you have to effectively pay twice as its leeching your bandwidth.

Thanks but no thanks EA, I'll spend my money elsewhere.

NfS: Carbon adverts I don't mind as it suits the setting and will make the city feel more "alive" after all the last two games had Burger King adverts in them if I remember correctly.

We can only hope gamers will stop buying games with dynamic adverts though for the PC, though I doubt it.

Does anyone know if Microsoft are planning these adverts for XBox360 games since it would be pretty easy to update with Live service?

NFS: Carbon will have dynamic adverts, its one of the first generation of EA games with them (like BF2142).

I know that from reading your original post. I'm just saying if gamers are really against dynamic adverts then they shouldn't buy the titles with the technology.

I should've put the word "dynamic" in the first line in my post above. :)

Ah sorry, mis-interpreted what you said :p I agree :)

Hopefully it wont be long before someone comes up with a way of blocking the ad content, be it hack or port blocking, or specifically re-routing certain ip addresses. In the meantime I will not actively support any company that goes down this route.

Given that Carbon was always going to have ads anyways I would prefer dynamic ones over static ones. At least this way I get something new to look at rather than seeing the same thing every time. I actually like the idea that ads in future games are going to be targeted, the ads are going to be there anyway might as well be for something I am interested in. I much prefer this to having to pay for extra content, which seems to be the other new money making option being tested at the moment.

Its like they want you to download pirate versions with that crap ripped out  EA get dumber by the minute.

i dont mind these dynamic ads, as long as it is inkeeping with the style and theme of the game, and obviously dosnt effect gameplay, then wheres the problem, dont like it dont look at it.
