NH D14 worries

Hey OcUK,

Last night I installed the NH D14 with my stock 2500k ready to try some overclocking. The issue is that once I turned it back on to check it was working my idle temps don't seem as low as they were. With the stock heatsink I was staying around mid 20's, maxing low 30's but now it seems to be around 30's with 1 core up to 37. That is with the fans on max as I haven't gone into the BIOS to adjust them yet

Now I know these temps aren't bad, but I was kind of expecting the Noctua to at least match the stock cooler. I know I'm probably just worrying and I haven't run a stress test yet but I'm concerned I might not have fitted it correctly.

Any tips? Thanks

There is barely any difference between coolers at idle its when the chips start pumping out lots of heat that they show their worth.

this^^^
Its load temps that tell you how well a cooler is performing.
The D14 is one of the best, so you will be fine.

what method did you apply the paste? ed, grain of rice size amount

Hey, I used a pea sided amount in the centre and let the heatsink spread it

I dont want to make a new thread, so I`m gonna ask here, because its relevant.

I want to install same cpu cooler (nh d14), but I have Corsair Vengeance hight profile ram`s, and I know that they not goint to fit under that monster. (I checked that Noctua capability web)

How safe it is to remove those heatsinks from ram?

It's perfectly safe to do, there's even a link o the Noctua website that gives you instructions iirc. However it will void the warranty for the RAM.

that would be fine.
did you stress test it yet with either prime95 or intel burn test?
use realtemp or coretemp to check your temps

Not had a chance to yet because I had to go away for the weekend but planning on it when I get back. Will post the results up here

Good coolers these, around 10deg cooler than my old corsair H50 in Intel Burn Test. That's pretty substantial! Effectively eliminates temps as an issue when overclocking.

Double check your fans are working, and the mounting is secure.

I don't know if you have already done it but you can mount the fan that sits over the ram either higher up or on the other side, you could also if possible mount the cooler blowing air up or down instead of across.

My idle temp with a 2500k(1.38v) and D14 is about 38c, load is 60c. OC is in my sig.

I never bothered to worry about my temps because they're below 70.

Thanks for the feedback guys, when I get home tonight I'll run prime then if everything is in order start overclocking! I'd like to keep my temps within that sort of range too

Ran prime for a bit over half an hour and got max temps of 42, 45, 53, 47. I'm Pretty happy with those at stock speeds so guess it is installed correctly. Thank you all
