just about to install my new NH-U12P SE1366, but noticed an issue with the backplate.

See pic (sorry for the poor focus):

The metal support bolt on the right front is shorter than the others and has no thread.

I think it is a fault as there is no mention of this is the installation instructions.

Has anyone else seen this?

hate it when that happens, definite +1 on the return, you will only have issues with the heatsink not connecting with the CPU properly cause one part is loose.

Oh man another Noctua prob ...

In my opinion u should have taken a diff one m8 ... Megahalem, Thor Hammer, TRUE, v8 , Hyper .... those are heatsinks to work m8.

I had the NH12 on my system with push and pull config ... i would burn my cpu ... it maxed out 70-85 celcius and the pc would shut down. But whenever i touched Noctua heatsink it was cool. The bottom of it ? U dont wanna know hot as hell ! Problem ? No heat transfer to keep up with pwrfull cpus. Also if u take a look at Noctua backplate and the aluminum one from coolermaster you see the different as well that one is for good heat dissipation.

Check my signature to what keeps my oc's cpu cooool :D

Good luck w replacement.

thanks all.

The noctua gets very good reviews, but I'm also a bit concerned that because the fan doesn't blow towards the MB, the heatsinks on the MB won't get the air they need.

Apart from the TRUE and the Megahalems, those others are inferior to the Noctua, especially when you consider noise. Noctua's SecuFirm is one of the best mounting system I have come across so it was just unfortunate that the OP's one was broken. However they have excellent support and after an email, everything should be sorted out.

I had a Noctua fan that broke which was my own fault and they just sent me another!

That's why I went for the noctua - I'm more interested in noise levels than overclocking. The reason i've gone for a speced out machine is for music production rather than anything else.

Still not conviced about its ability to cool the MB though?

It will be the same with any of those coolers though. Maybe you can get attach a small fan to the heatsinks on the motherboard.

This might help if you don't want to attach a fan using cable ties etc...

what about a cooler that blows down, like the stock intel cooler. I would have thought that would provide more airflow to the MB that the NH-U12P that blows accross?
