Hey all.

Does anyone know if an employee on SSP still has their NI contribution paid?

Friend of mine went off on long-term sickness in October 2010, and was still receiving SSP up-to around July 2011...so for the FY 2010/11 they were still employed.

They've just tried to claim contribution-based job seekers and been told that they're not eligible for any money as they didnt pay enough contribution during 2010/11.

I admit that the person has left it a long time before trying to claim but part of the illness was anxiety so they've not been able to go and try signing on till now.

They've even offered o pay a lump sum to bring their contributions back up but the DWP refused.

Thanks in advance!

Well SSP is under the LEL threshold so no NI is paid.

This also would not count towards a qualifying year for the state pension either (I assume)

I'm not really up on the benefits system nowadays, but can't they get income based JSA rather than contributions based?

Best to register for it anyway, even if they get nothing, as you get your NI 'credited' so the time still counts towards the state pension qualifying year.

I'm surprised tbh they were on SSP via the employer for so long, a company can sign them off and over to the state after 28 weeks IIRC. This would have probably stopped this anomaly

their partner earns too much for income based to get anything either.

They were indeed on SSP for around 6 months...must have been very liked by the employer.

As you say though, its an anomoly. So I'm hoping that the appeal letter they wrote explaining it all will get them something.

Thanks for your help
