I've just got my P45 from my last job and noticed my NI number was wrong when I started my new job I filled in a P46 with my correct NI number. Do i need to phone the tax office and tell them or do they check the NI numbers anyway before giving out your tax code?

they DONT check
Ring your tax office immediately - not because they'll chase you for your missing NI payments, but the fact that the money you've been paying is being allocated to someone else

Hehe, you make it sound like he'll get some sort of direct benefit from it at some point. ;)

In theory your state pension comes from it, in practice your state pension is worthless though.

Ah, thanks for that. Good job i pay into a private pension fund and i am member of Bupa but sadly don't get any reduction in NI because of it.

Thanks though chaps

I noticed the same thing myself the other week when sorting my tax out for my second job. My first job had the wrong number down, luckily my earnings were never above the lower limit so I don't pay NI on that job anyway.
