Thought I'd give something back to these forums after asking for help.

BorgChat - http://borgchat.softnews.ro/

It features a really nice LAN file sharing interface. I've been searching for a few days now and couldn't track anything down, but my housemate just found this and it works a treat.

Just a heads-up, really. Networking is crap. :)

whats wrong with windows sharing!?
It works when it wants to, and no more!
I can connect up one day and it'll work fine. The next, using the same equipment and everything, it won't work. I'm so fed up I've built my own NAS server with an old P3!

i've never ever had problems with it (only really used it since sp2 was released mind)

used it on multiple networks now, no issues

start, run, \\computername

^thats how i navigate

and i map in cmd, using net use x: \\computername\sharename

Exactly how I do it - sometimes it just doesn't work... :( Maybe it doesn't like me!

You would have thought in this day an age Microsoft would have addressed this point. I mean who wants to use USB or something when a direct cable connection is just as good?!

Something as simple as an ethernet connection becomes an arduous task.

I have a fully updated system - latest drivers and everything - now I just use switches rather than direct connects - it simplifies everything.

Theres one point i think that should be mentioned. when you try using Windows file sharing sometimes i've noticed it automatically shares drives for you.

when i does so it tends to share something as \\[MACHINENAME]\C$ which sometimes works sometimes doesnt.

If you unshare it from that and remove the share completely but leave file sharing enabled, then reshare the drive with an uncomplicated name like \\[MACHINENAME]\C it works first time everytime.

other times it does work is when your trying to access it using a guest account. that i have had trouble with.

I do have a problem with XP Home on a laptop. It can access everything. but nothing can access it i've tried everything but its still causing a headache. :(

I used windows file sharing for sharing files over the network. But there were a few registry settings and a service i had to disable to get it to work properly and at proper speeds.

Now works perfectly everytime.

Nothing wrong with Windows file sharing. Fast and easy. If it's giving you problems then there is something quite badly wrong - probably a crappy personal firewall.
