So i got suspended for not fully starring out a swear word - what a tool.

What concerns me is this, if i hadnt attempted to star out the word at all it would have happened automatically and no ban.

For a first offence as well this seems quite extreme to me, what on earth is wrong with a slap on the wrist and a dont do this again note? Especially when variations on said 4 letter swear word can be seen all over the boards with no attempts at starring out and just a couple of changed letters.

Seems to me that someone got a little power hungry on monday!

At least name and shame before the thread explodes...

Also, just for the sake of it, I'll point out this conversation should be happening in private with a mod :p

kd

Even if i had the mod's name i wouldnt name and shame.

Expect a response "we cannot see everything all the time, so you were unlucky to get caught" or something similar :p

aye thats what i am expecting.

I clicked on your name to see how old you were, expecting you to be 12.....alas i was greeted with 29 :(

i cant see anything childish with the response, just highlighting a possible better way for the situation to have been handled with given the circumstances, but hey ho, over and done with now.

So you think swearing should be allowed?

It is not the issue of "no swearing allowed" that i disagree with, infact my attempt to star out the word should imply that i fully agree with the fact that swearing shouldnt be an open free for all. What miffed me was the way it was handled, and the fact i didnt get a response from a "contact us" mail i sent highlighting my thoughts about this.

To me a response to that would have been sufficent and i wouldnt have felt the desire to make a silly forum thread to "vent" a little.

To really be pedantic about things i funnily enough spent a little time reviewing the rules during my ban:

the rule i breached (because i was a tool and hadnt previously read the forum rules and worked on common sense alone):

No swearing, posting of "adult" material, personal attacks or "trolling"
OcUK would like you and your whole family to learn and share via our forums. For this reason swearing and the posting of "adult" or offensive material is forbidden. Simply replacing some of the letters in a swearword with a * or any other character is not acceptable. If you must then please replace the whole word with ***** or other repeated character. We also expect members to behave respectfully and not launch personal or abusive attacks on other members. Those who post for the sole purpose of causing trouble are not welcome here and will be dealt with accordingly.

What happens if I break the rules? (like i did for the first time on monday)

At best your post will be edited by the appropriate Don and you will be issued a warning. If the offence is more serious, your post will be deleted and you may be suspended for a period of time decided by the moderators. Posting "why was my post edited/deleted?" etc. will only make matters worse so please don't. For persistant and deliberate rule-breakers your account will be "Nuked". That means you are no longer welcome on these forums and your account will no longer function. If you re-register, your new account will be nuked immediately. Multiple accounts are not allowed under any circumstances.

so a minor breach of rules (posting up a joke with 1 swear word in, possibly considered adult, but no more adult then some of the lovely lady pics seen in the random images thread) is considered "more serious offence", even though my post was merely edited not deleted, and toping that off given that suspension even after post deletion is still a "maybe" I was miffed enough to want to make this post.

If you'd bothered to read the FAQ then you wouldn't be in this predicament ;)

O and calling a mod a tool? Nice going, I think a 7 day holiday would be suitable...

You do realise that i have only called myself a tool?????????............

So no swearing is good but partial swearing is okay. How partial - one letter starred, two? how about three or only when it's obvious what it means to (to who?) or any other variation you can think of? It quickly becomes impossible to judge anything and as a result nothing is judged.

No i thought i had complied and didnt realise that partial starring out wasnt enough, as i pointed out totally my fault.

However the auto censor covers up a multitude of other sinners without them realising, so surely my clear attempt to not offend on a higher level by at least doing something actively should count towards something?

Regarding punishment nobody takes notice of a slap on the wrist and as you rightly point out mostly people get away with it - so what would be the point in having a rule if people mostly got away with it and only got a slap on the wrist on the one occasion it was spotted?

I'm all for being reasonable and pragmatic but you're not seeing that idea from the other side of the fence. It simply isn't possible for a few volunteer mods to do what you ask.

Your first point you have very much generalised the population in to one bucket and sadly i disagree here, i would have fully taken note of a slap on the wrist and adhered in full to the advise at that point.

My point was merely that i breached a rule, but the punishement superceeded the offence, quite significantly. Its like giving someone a life sentence for doing 34mph in a 30.

I cant take anything away from the mods, someones got to do the job, for free as well, but i have found in life that sometimes a little polite decorum goes a long way.

It's hard to miss with all the yellow text where it has been edited out of posts and reminding the poster to fully star out swearies, and it's in the FAQ, so someone with over 1000 posts should know it by now.

in my defence, i havent seen any yellow text related to swearing before, just yellow text on removed posts for not being relavant to the topic etc.

95% of my posts have appeared in the Sports Arena, specifically the gym rats thread, which suffers from very little moderation due to the general level of respect there seems to be there.

ho hum, point made, i was miffed, not big time, but enough to have wanted to make this thread, and it would appear that i am not the only one.
There is some mod attention here, and maybe, just a small chance here, a behind the scenes Don discussion may take place to put a blanket rule on this, who knows, but if i hadnt of made the post, then the possibility of that discussion would have been less for sure.

It was me who sussed him, what he put is exlicitly covered in the guidelines we work to and a 2 day sus is what you get

So can the rules on swearing be made nice and clear as your mod guidelines are? as the rules do not read that way, or are not infact close to that. As i posted already, the rules imply that a ban is possible if the infraction is considered serious, after the offending post has been deleted. In my case, the post was edited, not deleted, and still ban.. you can see how this contradicts the rules as written?

I read it as calling himself a tool in sarcastic fashion. If I thought he'd called you one he would have had another sus :)

so if you call a mod a tool (the harshest of insults i know!!) you get suspended?

daily i see on member call another member something, and nothing happens so why is it any different when its directed at a mod?
