3D V-NAND Technology and THE SAMSUNG SSD 850 EVO

Samsung’s unique and innovative 3D V-NAND flash memory architecture is a breakthrough in
overcoming the density limitations, performance and endurance of today’s conventional planar NAND architecture. 3D VNAND is fabricated by stacking 32 cell layers vertically over one another rather than
decreasing the cells dimensions and trying to fit itself onto a fixed horizontal space resulting in
higher density and better performance utilizing a smaller footprint.

The 850 EVO is the advanced consumer SSD powered by 3D V-NAND technology that maximizes everyday computing experiences with optimized performance and enhanced reliability.

Optimized performance for everyday computing experiences

Powered by Samsung's cutting-edge 3D V-NAND technology, 850 EVO delivers top-class sequential
and random read and write performance to optimize everyday computing. With improved performance thanks to TurboWrite technology the 850 EVO provides not only more than a 10% better user experience than 840 EVO but up to 1.9x faster random write speeds for the 120/250 GB models as well. In fact, the 850 EVO delivers top class sequential read (540 MB/s) and write (520 MB/s) performance in all capacities. This comes with optimized random read and write performance on all QD and improved QD1 and QD2 random performance for Client PC usage.

Reinforcement of TurboWrite Technology

In the early stages of the 840 EVO, Samsung adopted sequential write performance first. With
TurboWrite, write speeds are significantly accelerated during data transfers by creating a high-performance write buffer in the SSD. If a consecutive write operation (i.e. no idle time) exceeds the size of the buffer, the transfer will exit TurboWrite and be processed at ”After TurboWrite” speeds. Once the buffer is cleared, TurboWrite performance will resume. However, the buffer size for TurboWrite is more than sufficient for everyday PC use, and you should experience accelerated speeds for most workloads.

For the 850 EVO, enhanced TurboWrite technology applied to random write speeds up to 1.9x faster for the 120 GB model and 1.25x faster for the 250GB model over the 840 EVO.

Guaranteed endurance and reliability for maximum use

Guaranteed endurance

The 850 EVO delivers guaranteed endurance and reliability by doubling the TBW compared to the
previous generation 840 EVO backed by an industry leading 5 year warranty. With twice the endurance of a typical NAND flash SSD, the 850 EVO will keep working as long as you do. The 850 EVO guarantees a 5 year limited warranty or 75TBW for 120GB and 250GB, 150TBW for 500GB and 1TB.

Enhanced reliability with improved sustained performance

With enhanced reliability through improved sustained performance, the 850 EVO assures longterm
dependable performance up to 30% longer than the 840 EVO with minimized performance degradation. This means you can use it every day when taking care of work or entertaining yourself knowing it will keep performing even with heavy daily workloads over the years.

Advanced data encryption

The 850 EVO provides the same data encryption feature as the 840 EVO does. Self-Encrypting Drive
(SED) security technology will help keep data safe at all times. It includes an AES 256-bit hardwarebased
encryption engine to ensure that your personal files remain secure. Being hardwarebased, the encryption engine secures your data without performance degradation that you may experience with a software-based encryption. Also, 850 EVO is compliant with advanced security management solutions (TCG Opal and IEEE 1667). Magician will guide ”How to use security features”. Furthermore, you can erase or initialize data with the crypto erase service with PSID.

Efficient power management for all PC applications

Power consumption affects everyone. You actually save of up to 50% more on power than
with the 840 EVO during write operations thanks to 3D V-NAND consuming half the power of 2D
planar NAND.

Plus, whether it’s preserving battery life for longer cordless use or just saving on costs, power
management is important. Device sleep signals the SSD to enter a low power state which is vital for
ultra-books and other battery powered devices. With 850 EVO’s Device Sleep at a highly efficient
2mW you get longer battery life on your notebook thanks to a controller optimized for 3D V-NAND.
With the 850 EVO you can work and play longer without having to plug in.

Summary

SATA 6Gb/s SSD for Client PCs

2.5 inch form factor

Samsung 32 layer 3D V-NAND

Samsung Magician Software for SSD management

Samsung Data Migration Software

What is V-NAND and how does it differ from existing technology?

Samsung's 3D V-NAND flash memory is fabricated using an innovative vertical design. Its vertical architecture stacks 32 cell layers on top of one another rather than trying to decrease the cells' length and width to fit today's ever-shrinking form factors. This architecture results in higher density and higher performance using a smaller footprint. Samsung's 3D V-NAND technology is a breakthrough in overcoming the density limits currently faced with conventional planar NAND architecture.

Boost performance with an industry-leading 3D V-NAND SSD

Powered by Samsung's own cutting-edge 3D V-NAND technology, the 850 PRO delivers up to two times the density and write speed when compared with traditional 20 nm planar NAND flash for the ultimate in read and write performance. By changing to a 32-layer cylindrical cell structure, more cells can be stacked vertically, resulting in a smaller footprint and higher density. As a result, you gain superior maximum read and write performance in both sequential and random aspects, especially the 128GB model that outperforms other similar models in the market by more than 100Mb/s in write speed.

Shift into high gear with the RAPID mode

Plus, you can kick up the read/write performance on every capacity when you need it with the RAPID mode. Just like shifting gears in a car, Magician software gives you the option to enhance performance by processing data on a system level using free PC memory (DRAM) as a cache. The 128 GB model, for example, is able to double its performance by using the V-NAND technology.

An SSD that won't quit before you do

With twice the endurance and reliability of a typical NAND flash SSD, the 850 PRO will keep working as long as you do. Samsung's V-NAND technology is built to handle an 80 GB daily workload, which equates to 150 Terabytes Written (TBW), enabling you to use the SSD for long periods of time. Plus, it comes with the industry's top-level ten-year limited warranty.

Work longer with high-efficiency innovation

The efficient, power management components in the 850 PRO enable you work longer and more productively. The 850 PRO boasts the lowest power consumption of any SSD when in full use so that power consumption is minimized while market-leading performance is maintained., And, in the device sleep mode, it consumes only 2 m watts of power, as determined in test results on an Ultrabook™ device. Plus, its LPDDR2 cache memory provides higher performance while consuming 30 percent less power when active and 93 percent less power when idle than typical DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

Safeguard precious data without sacrificing performance

When you take your laptop on the road, you not only need to protect your PCs hardware, but your personal data, too. But don't worry. The 850 PRO's Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) technology will help keep it safe, even if you lose your laptop. The drive includes an AES-256-bit hardware-based, full disk encryption engine that secures your data without performance degradation, which is often experienced with software-based encryption.

The 850 PRO's advanced security complies with the Trusted Computing Group™ (TCG) Opal v2.0 standards, protecting Postscript Image Data (PSID), and is compatible with the Microsoft? eDrive Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1667 protocol. Plus, you can erase or initialize data with the crypto erase service.

Protect your PC from overheating with Dynamic Thermal Guard protection

To ensure it won't let you down, the 850 PRO includes Dynamic Thermal Guard protection, which keeps your PC performance safe from heat. After all, when you're totally immersed in your work or in a competitive video game, the last thing you want to have happen is for your computer to overheat. Dynamic Thermal Guard protection monitors and maintains the drive's optimal operating temperature with a throttle feature that automatically drops the SSD's temperature when necessary to protect your data and ensure the responsiveness you expect. So, your PC will stay cool, even if you overwork it - and you'll keep your cool, too.

Level up to the 850 PRO simply without any hassle

Samsung has made upgrading to the 850 PRO simple using its One-stop Install Navigator software. You can migrate all the data from your SSD or HDD to the 850 PRO quickly and easily. The Auto Install guide, included in the toolkit, guides you through the simple three-step installation process.

What's more, you can conveniently monitor, manage and maintain your new 850 PRO with the Samsung Magician software that's also available through the One-stop Install Navigator toolkit. The Magician features tools to help you maximize performance, including benchmarking, advanced OS optimization, disk health status tracking and over-provisioning (OP) settings.

Ensure each component works together seamlessly

Samsung is one of the few manufacturers that actually design all the SSD components in-house. And among those who do, Samsung has the most experience in the SSD market. Because Samsung has intimate knowledge of every component and its parts, it can fine-tune them at each stage of development to ensure they work perfectly together. The result – enhanced performance with a 32-layer 3D V-NAND flash memory, lower power consumption with an up to 1 GB LPDDR2 DRAM cache memory and improved energy-efficiency with the 3-core MEX controller.

The SM951 boasts outstanding performance, supporting both PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 2.0 interfaces. They can read and write sequentially at 1,600 MB/s (megabytes per second) and 1,350 MB/s respectively based on PCIe 2.0. This performance level is approximately three times faster than that of the latest SSD with a SATA interface and about 30 percent faster than that of the Samsung XP941, its predecessor. In addition, the new SSD's random read and write speeds reach up to 130,000 and 85,000 IOPS (inputs / outputs per second) respectively.

For ultra-slim notebooks and workstations wanting to adopt the PCIe 3.0 interface, the SM951 can read and write sequentially at 2,150 MB/s and 1,550 MB/s respectively, which would provide approximately four times faster sequential reading performance compared to current SATA SSDs. With a PCIe 3.0 interface, the drive achieves substantially higher energy efficiency, requiring only about 450 MB/s per watt for sequential reading and 250 MB/s per watt for sequential writing, which translates into a more than 50 percent improvement in performance per watt over that of the XP941 SSD.

In addition, the SM951 is the first SSD to adopt the L1.2 low power standby mode (which allows all high-speed circuits to be turned off when a PC is sleeping or in hibernation) as defined by PCI-SIG (the PCIe standards body). By embracing the L1.2 level of standby operation, the SM951's power consumption is drastically reduced – to under 2mW, about a 97 percent decrease from the 50mW consumed using a L1 state.

Samsung's SM951 comes in the M.2 form factor (80 mm x 22 mm), which is only about one seventh the size of a 2.5" SSD. Also, it weighs approximately six grammes. The drive's compactness is well suited for most notebook PC designs, freeing up space for other components including the battery. The SM951 lineup consists of 512, 256 and 128 GB SSDs.

PLease Note. Some M.2 motherboards only support SATA 6Gbps speeds or PCI-e x 2 lanes. You need to make sure your board supports PCI-E x4 Lanes to get the full speed from this SSD.

There is now no excuse to not try an SSD with 120GB models starting from under £40, very affordable! :)

Very nice, typically I just bought the 250GB 850 EVO elsewhere for a little more than the reduced price.

Shame the V300s are so awful since the bait and shift, performance has been absolutely crippled compared to the original stats/reviews.

Disappointing prices on the lager/better drives tbh, the sammy 1tb is £30 cheaper elsewhere, the m.2 sammy drives are around a tenner cheaper elsewhere... and the rest of the prices just about bring you in line with other retailers.

I'm only whinging as I'm after a 500gb drive myself :P

deffo need to go back and check your coding also.. missing html everywhere :P
makes the post messy ^_^

shame i already have 5x SSD's i dont think i need more atm lol

It is the forums, we do not care. Website looks fine which is what matters as that is our shop, the forums is not. :)

With the risk of getting another forum penalty point the Sammy SM951 256gb is way too overpriced if you shop around.

So no no no nice nice nice price I am afraid.

What's the best 120 drive for reliability?

Not relevant (or might be) but I'd never dream of getting a 120GB drive, considering my 250GB is nearly full :p This is of course with a few games and various software.

120GB is fine however if you'll just be browsing the net etc

Return rates are as follows:
Crucial: 0.72%
Kingston: 0.93%
Samsung: 0.49%

All very low!

Samsung it is then, though I have always been a fan of Crucial SSD's.

Poppycock. :p

I'm running Win 8.1 and drivers and basic programs on a 64GB Crucial M4! 15GB spare.

2x 1TB, for storage and another for games and another 120GB SSD, which I move games on and off if I regularly play them to cut loading times.

I don't like all my eggs in one basket. :D

Now there is real customer service. Try getting that information out of the rainforest, purple shirters or other online retailers.

That is because we are quite open and happy to share certain data and be rather open and un-opinionated on hardware. :)

The Samsung drives are easily pretty much the best, probably only bettered by Intel for reliability but Intel consumer drives are not so great performance wise or are simply over-priced for the performance.

Oh I have multiple HDDs as well, it's nothing like that at all ;) For the OS drive I prefer keeping things clean but that's not always possible with small SSDs :( Hey at least the prices are coming down :p

almost jumped on the one of the 250gb Samsung Evo's & a 1TB external hdd until I saw DPD adding almost a tenner onto the price for shipping to Northern Ireland.

shame OcUK can't offering more cost effective methods of shipping to NI

OcUK are the best with graphics cards but with storage always seem to fall behind, I got my BX100 cheaper than that over 2 months ago elsewhere with a forest site. Direct from them aswell.

Have to agree with that ^

Looking to get the sm951 but a quick Google shows that it's cheaper at 3 of your competitors? Come on Gibbo! Windows 10 is out, a lot of people (me)may be looking to do fresh installs, give us a good price here!

Two Evo 500s ordered yesterday (with a probable 32 more needed). It's just a shame your warehouse didn't bother to ship them......
