Hello all,

Following on from my advice on which mattress to buy I have a follow up question. As you may have gathered from the title, I would likea really nice quality knife block, its kind of a present for my girlfriend who loves stuff like this (I would keep the £10 from woolworths that we have at the moment).

I guess I would like to spend something in the £100 mark but would like something that will last a long time. I dont care if its been endorsed by Jamie Oliver or the pope or stuff like that.

Thanks in advance :)

Mike

I just realised that I used the phrase thanks in advance....its got to be one of my all time most hated phrases as it means im about to get screwed over at work!

I have the Bodum Bistro one, looks great holds knives well and costs about £40. May not be suitable if you have loads of knives as its not huge but i have 5 in mine with room to spare.

I'm going to have a go at making one.

Hello,

Thanks for the comments so far.

From doing a lot of reading, I am thinking that if I want to spend £150 ish I should get three knives rather than a block as the block is a bit of a waste.

My problem is that I know my girlfriend will like the idea of a block as something that looks a bit snazzy. Knives on their own I think would make less of a present.

Can anyone point me towards three really nice quality knives that come in a block?

I got some magnetic pods for my Wusthof Knifes

They were about £8 each and I attached them to some freestanding shelve units (billy book cases!) that provide extra storage by my worktop

:) no worries - it took a bit of confidence from me to hang £200 knives on them but they're pretty robust, these come in different colours too. They're also soft so it doesn't dull the edge. The only one that's a bit of a risk is the large chefs knife as that's quite heavy and I think I reversed one of the magnets when I dropped it and they fell out so on one of the sides it slowly starts to drop down but on the other side it's fine. Though to be fair they've not got far to go if they do slide in my kitchen!

Knives are pretty personal though, for me it was the shape of the handle and also being able to have an offset bread knife so it didn't smash my hand into the board when cutting bread! If you can find a retail stockist close to you try them out, take your lady over there too and use the pretext of I'm looking for some knives, if you were to use them would these be comfortable for you... That sort of thing :)
