Just thought I'd share something positive about an old card. I was playing around with Left 4 Dead settings last night, after putting everything on maximum settings I was surprised to see that my card was still dishing out 80 fps (average) minimum of 55fps and maximum of 120 fps. This is with everything maxed out (16xqaa) at a resolution of 1280x1024 (I know that's not that high but it's the maximum my monitor can take). The only setting that I had down quite low was the memory pool (due to crashes I've been having I took steps) which was on medium. The game doesn't "look" much better than my usual settings, but it does "feel" better - if you understand what I mean. I know that my CPU probably has a lot to do with it, being a source game its supposed to be CPU intensive rather than gfx card intensive, but I would have thought that on maximum, my card would suffer. I was thinking about upgrading, but if it can cope that well I think I'll leave it in another year (or until it starts to have trouble). What sort of cards/settings are you all running with what results?

I agree, but at the same time l4d is hardly a test! being source engine and all :)

Yeh I know :) The Source engine is quite well written, and quite old now. I'll get a new monitor eventually for the higher res, but after I've moved away from my parents (as I'll want to keep my current dual screen setup for my p4 pc and currently have no space to store them!)

I also don't yet have Crysis, so I can't use that to test it!

i'm still using my 8800gt on my 24" 1920x1080

Grid
HL2 / Source games
Company of Heroes

all run fine at that res, mostly with AA off i think, but i value frames per second over jaggies..

i tend to get a new card every 18 months or so

I'm just upgrading from a 8800GT to a 9800 GTX+ but only because the upgrade will only cost about £40 after selling the 8800GT

Really I cannot fault the 8800GT, I just fancied a little more power without the price of a GTX 260/285 and the GTX+ are solid overclockers which is it's about, value for money :)

I have just upgraded to the Gtx280, and apart from the comedy 415 fps in RFactor at 1900x1200, it is a step, but the not the be all and end all. Essentially i now have Far Cry 2 at full spec, which the 8800 struggled with.

I have the BFG 8800GT OC2 version, and it's still holding it's own in every game I play. Far Cry 2 on high is fine, L4D completely maxed out isn't a struggle either (1680 x 1050). I'm really happy with my purchase of it nearly a year ago. I can see as we edge round the corner that its going to be somewhat limited compared to the 280/285, but I am happy to wait for those cards to slip down to the £200 mark before committing.

edit: I'd say the noise once playing for a while is the only issue with my GT, it being single slot the fan really goes for it to keep it cool.

Likewise bledd. :) And with my new cooler on, its also silent and cool. ;)

Grid on my 1920x1200 24" is more than playable. I have found however, that the sweet spot seems to be 1650 X 1080 with 2xMSAA. Shadows down to medium, and it sits at 60fps for virtually the whole race. The visuals in this game never fail to raise a smile.

I was so tempted by the GTX280`s, but decided/forced to wait while next gen.

I treated my 8800GT to one of the aftermarket heatsinks and a 120mm fan. Temps halfed, can overclock to 700mhz stable, just makes this setup much better. Case is cooler, CPU overclocked further and very happy with my 8800GT still :D

are there any idiot guides for card overclocking?

mine has a trad2 on it now and temps are really low now

The only people who find the 8800GT slow are those who were also convinced (largely by the internet no doubt) that because it wasn't the newest tech it had somehow decreased in speed.

Reality being it's still a very very good card, even at 1920 x 1200. They have an obscenely good power to framerate ratio too. I'm still looking for one second hand to put in this machine. Perfect casual gaming card.

I'm still on my 8800gt because i only game @ 1440x900 @ 120hz on my monster 24" CRT (fw900). I could put it higher on 1920x1200@85hz but i just love the smoothness :) and thats what aa is for:)

At 1440x900, to my knowledge, no card is really "that" much faster. So patience is the key for me....

Perfect casual gaming card.
I think that honour goes to the Radeon HD4670 (17w/69w RV770 vs 51w/135w G92)

I'm very fond of the nVidia 8800GT though, October 2007 was a very exciting time when we all were scrambling for what appeared to be an 8800GTX Killer!

I'm pretty sure the G92 can provide an enjoyable gaming experience in most titles, was happy with mine until the Radeon HD4850 lauched with it's gazillion shaders! :D

My 9600GT performs very smoothly at 1680x1050. Not everything on Max, but High settings nonetheless. However in anticipation of acquiring a larger screen, and good old upgrade-fever, I have caved and purcahsed a 4870. Will probably get round to installing it this afternoon :D.
