Nicely Done

Nothing............ it says from this website you can get a pentium D 805. Which apprantly is the new king of overclocking.... trouncing the opteron on the fact that it can run 3.8ghz on air and 4.3 on water :D

We bought an Intel Pentium D 805 from a local retail outlet and overclocked it up to 4.1 GHz, even though this part runs by default at just 2.66 GHz. This represents a heretofore unattained clock rate increase of just over 54 %, for which only some additional cooling is required. The secret is in the FSB clock rate, which is raised from 133 MHz to over 200 MHz; the system remains completely stable, because modern motherboards with Intel 9xx chipsets are laid out to handle FSB clock rates of up to 266 MHz. In language that overclocking enthusiasts will love to hear, the Pentium D 805 ascends to the throne as the new King of overclocking, knocking out the AMD Opteron 144.

Yep  look at the benchmarks.. it stomps the FX57 on Fear :D

Well if your into overclocking then yes. AM2 is a waste of money right now with the performance benefits being less than 5%. I mean £80 for a CPU that will beat others priced £600... what more incentive do you want to overclock

Have I just made a mistake ordering a complete new AM2 rig this morning for £800? Should I be cancelling and then reordering this Intel dual core setup?

He has a very good question, first of all I would have waited for Conroe, however now its a bit of a flop.... I would persona, lly go for the intel.

I needed a pc now and thought that by going AM2 3500+ that I was going to be able to purchase a Dual Core AMD later in the year when the new chips come out.

Bought the following; Should I revise?

Asus M2NPV-VM Micro ATX (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £59.95
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail (CP-164-AM)
£74.95
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
£109.95
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI
£139.95
Samsung SpinPoint P SP2504C 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache
£44.50
NEC ND3550 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black)
£19.95
Antec Sonata II Piano Black Quiet Case - 450W Smart Power PSU
£56.95
Logitech UltraX™ Media Desktop - OEM (KB-065-LG)
£29.95
JBL Creature II 2.1 Speakers - (Black) Retail (SP-006-HK)
£46.95
Acer AL1916WS 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor
£159.00
DVI - VGA Converter (GX-033-CO)
£2.95
Subtotal £745.05
Shipping £54.45
VAT £139.92
Total £939.42

To be honest I'm not all that interested in overclocking, just about getting the best value for money. If it's as simple as changing a few BIOS settings to get a massive increase then I'd have to consider.

I think I'll stick with my order and wait for Quad Core AMDs early in the next year. I've no intention of constantly upgrading until I feel my current setup is starting to drag. Plus, I'm pretty sure the AM2 X2 Series will take a dramatic price drop when Conroe arrives, making it a valid upgrade option in the nearish future.

So long as I can run BF2 and Quake 4 at full detail and high res then I'll be happy.

on toms harware i saw they used a gigabyte easy tune 5. Ive never overlocked before and have no idea how to, is easy tune good and fairly safe?

On Toms Hardware they used ridiculous volts for their 805 and it wasnt stable at 4ghz. No one on here has got 4ghz stable either. Toms hardware didnt overclock the opty either, hardly a fair test. I'm not denying that the 805s arent good chips but not everyone is gonna get the same oc nor be willing to put the amount of volts through that tomshardware did

:D just ordered one of these for my pc at work :D
didn't realise it was quite as good at OCing tbh... wanted a budget(ish) cpu with a 19" dell monitor and 2GB ram...

should be with us on monday so if i get a chance to clock it at work, i will do :)

I am willing to use silly volts ;)

As I have said before they are excellent chips and there have been loads of threads on them, I run mine at 3.7-3.8 on very quiet (near silent) air cooling and they are decent performers. Although saying that I really need to get some more ram for that system :/
