When I turn my camera on or off, there is a faint but noticeable electrical type noise, that last for about 1 second. The camera is a D5100 and is only a few days old. I've only noticed started noticing the noise today so I think it has only started occurring today. I'm not sure if it's worth mentioning but the noise occurs when the lens isn't attached as well as when it is attached.

Does anyone have any ideas what this is and if I should be concerned?

Thanks :)

I'm not a Nikon user so can't be sure, but could it be sensor cleaning? Does Nikon give an indication of when it is doing it like Canon?

Pretty sure its sensor cleaning, there should be an options in a menu somewhere to manually do it, try that and see if its the same sound (sorry, Canon user here so not sure where it would be, look in your manual for sensor cleaning.)

Ok thanks very much guys. I knew it was probably something stupid but it was driving me crazy. Sorry for the complete noob thread haha

Sorry to hijack the thread but my question is regarding sensor cleaning and means one less thread cluttering up the forum.

How often should sensor cleaning be performed? Is there a downside to doing it too often?
