I'm going down to Southampton for a night out with a few friends. None of us has been there before soooo can anyone recommend any places to go (or avoid)? dress code?

I'm sort of expecting some cheesy clubs with loads of sailor boys everywhere. hope i'm wrong :)

We're all 26-28. Hate cheesy stuff. Looking for some nice bars then a friendly club for a bit of dancing preferably to house music. A good atmosphere is pretty much essential, can't be doing with agro.

If you want the nice bars then head to bedford place at the top of London road. You have Lizard lounge, Mono, Orange Rooms and Apartment 26. All quite swanky up that end. You also have wetherspoons pub on London Road (called Giddybridge) which is cheap and doesnt have loud music.

I usually start in London road, do a few bars there and head down to leisure world to bambuu as I like RnB. Not sure where the house clubs are in soton tbh so maybe someone else can help you out there!

If you dont want agro then avoid Kellys club! Its chav central there and I've only been twice and seen fights both times!

Club wise if you want so disco style 60s music with an age range of 18-60 where you can do daughter, mum and grandmum all in one night, head to Flares!

There are also smaller clubs dotted around town. Academy is a studenty club but as its not term time I cant see many students being in there. You also have Nexus which plays rock/indie usually. Clowns/Jesters is a hole (but dirt cheap) again a student place so not sure its even open at the mo.

A few of the bars have late licences too with a dance floor if you dont fancy a full on club. Just dont forget southampton is pretty lame so most bars dont stay open past 12 and the rest all close by 2 or 3 it seems. Only a few stay open later. Bournemouth *** on this one!!

The 3 main clubs are down in Leisure World (where Odeon is). Bit of a trek from london road but then again southampton is spread out anyway. You Ikon/Diva, Jumpin Jaks and Bambuu bar there. Bambuu is RnB/Rap stylee music. Ikon/Diva changes so no idea whats on in there. Jumpin Jaks is full of slappers in short skirts :D

Oh yeah, dress code wise anything seems to go nowadays!! Just wear a shirt, jeans and shoes or smart trainers and you're sorted.

I was going to make such a comment, but actually thought about it and realised Bournemouth is **** now. Where do you go these days?

Since i've been back from uni it just hasn't been the same. Bar Me is crap, Bar Med is too quiet, The Villa is still a hole, Elements is still a chavfest, Bliss is still trying to be upmarket even though its full of students, Walkabout's full of beer boys and Consortium is dull. Have i missed anywhere :D

I was just referring really to the opening times in Bournemouth. Soton isnt that awful, but everything closes so early! Its all rushed :(

Well not quite - there is Unit 22 but I know that kinda music isn't to everyones tastes which is why I didn't post in here before

I'm in your age range (26) and have recently moved to Southampton, was at uni here from 1998-2001 as well.

As mentioned London Road is probably a good place to go for some decent bars. As far as clubbing goes I would suggest Ikon maybe, just make sure you don't give up on the queue and go in Jumpin' Jaks instead as that has more cheese. Technically speaking you should be able to get into Diva (its over 25s only) but they can be a bit funny about dresscode and id.

In general I would agree with the comment above about Bournemouth being much better for nights out. There's loads of bars with late licenses (4am) and some good clubs. HOWEVER, it can be quite expensive and there's a lot of posers. I also haven't been there for a couple of years so maybe things have changed.

Southampton groupies! :p

apart from the bars around bedford place and london road (student area) there isnt much else going for it. places at the top end tend to be more cheesy and if you dont want trouble youre best staying away. Most bars will close at 1-2am.

ive been to bournemouth a few times this year and the atmosphere is much better, more bars to choose from and there are late, late openings 3-4am. i'd pesonally rate bournemouth much higher than southampton for a decent night out.

I was really impressed with bar 22 when I went down there, it was a bit empty though. My favourite place to go out in southampton has to be the dungeon. Certainly not to everyones tastes though:D.

Unit 22 is great!

Though in all honesty I'm more of a hobbit/dungeon dweller myself.

Personally I would say avoid Jumpin' Jaks it sucks. On the friday/saturday nights there the line up of cheesy music hasn’t changed in nearly two years it’s truly shocking and crap (Unless your into the whole cheesy music thing then fair enough your be in heaven).

As I have toured Southampton many times with "Number 41" I completely agree with what he has said head to London road that’s the place to be really in Southampton. Shame there isn’t really anywhere else to go :(

nobody has mentioned the harbour for swanky nice places to drink and then to top it off with a real shindig of a laugh is to be had at the frog and frigget, small pub 2 levels, crusty old guy on guitar, playing really good tunes to which everyone gets on the tables and sings along really cool place if you like relaxed atmospheric fantastically fun evenings out.

rotters

ps i like the frog and frigget if you cant tell.

Haven't actually made it to U22 yet :o :o

Was down Hobbit and Dinge a couple of weekends ago, but due to money restrictions (IE I have none), friend restrictions (IE most of them are on the internet) and transport restrictions (IE I don't drive) I don't go out all that much :(

Really wish I could go out more often :(
