I'm going out to have a go at photos of all the christmas lights and funfair stuff in central Edinburgh. I hoping for a variety of moving and still shots, any advice of techniques etc?

Well.
You will require a tripod, or it will all be a big waste of time.
Use a high F-stop number, nice high depth of field, and low exposure times.
You will need a manual setting camera.
