Nikon D lenses nicer to use than G series?

I've recently noticed how much nicer the D series focusing rings handle and how much more solid the build of the lens feels compared with the G series which seems plasticy and cheap in comparison. Does anyone else feel the same way? Seems like a step backwards in some respects.
