Thinking of upgrading my d3000 that I got second hand, mainly as a result of the poor LCD screen (230k) that makes it difficult to check what shots are like when out. Second to this would be the low mp count and average at best iso performance with limited lighting. Was thinking of the d3200 with the vr2 kit lens as this solves the above, plus I like the menu system but not sure I'll see much better images?

You'll see substantially better resolution and ISO performance as well as screen quality with the D3200. There's unlikely to be much reason to go to the VR2 kilt lens though, as it's barely a step up over the earlier kit lenses -you'd be better off saving a little bit extra and getting something like a 35 1.8g

Yes, the kit lens would only be purchased so I can have a new lens and sell the d3000 as a whole. The first lens to buy seperate would be the one you mention.
