My last DSLR was a Canon 20D and I remember paying £1000 for it in the early 00's

I need a camera for creating big big print outs so the megapixel spec has caught my eye with this camera. I've read a few reviews and seen that it doesn't perform well at higher ISO levels over 400 and can lack that little sharpness.

Would buying the 35mm 1.8 sort the sharpness out you think?

Where did you hear that? Its ISO performance is the same as the D5100 and D7000 when looking at images the same size, and is one of the best crop sensors ever made.

^^^ as above, the ISO performance of the D3200 is very, very good, as is the DR, colour rendition and depth, detail.

The sharpness is also great, what you have to be careful of is the sensor can easily out resolve cheap lenses and diffraction will be visible at 100% magnification probably form f/8.0 . If you don't pixel peep but actually print your photos then the D3200 has greta IQ.

There are some really terrible review sites out there that don't know how to review cameras in the slightest. http://www.dxomark.com/ uses proper scientific, highly calibrated test procedures giving valid results comparable between cameras It is then useful to get some expert human input about rendering qualities.
