Nikon D40

As some as you know I bought a Nikon D40 a couple of weeks ago, really loving the camera at the moment, but its hard to play around with all the settings and knowing what will work and what won't...although I'm sure a lot of people on here will say just play about but I'm after some advice

Now its Christmas time, I've been taking my camera around at night to take photos of Christmas lights on houses in the dark, what settings would be best to get a dark picture yet have all the lights emphasized?

Also would this setting be able to take a photo of car for example and pick up all the reflections?
