Hi,
My Nikon D40x arrived today (Second hand superb condition) and whilst I await my SD card arriving Thursday I wanted to power up anyway and have a play about with the settings and take some preview only shots.

However, when I turn the camera off and on It keeps saying 'Clock has been reset' and I have to set the date/time etc up again. Can somebody tell me if this is simply because there is no SD card for it to store the data to yet or is it meant to store this internally without an SD card.

Thanks in advance, Ryan.

I am not sure how it stored the time, but mine doesn't ask me to set the time when I don't have the memory card in, so I don't think that is the reason.

Hmm, I suspected this might be the case. Also if ever i stop navigating around the menu for a second the screen goes off. This is whilst in P Mode, the instruction booklet does say the screen will go off whilst focussing, but is this normal? I would prefer the screen to stay on for several seconds if I leave it.

right, just checked up on this....you need to charge the internal clock battery. this is done by inserting the fully charged battery or leaving camera connected to mains (from the manual) 3 days of charging should give you 1 months of charge for clock battery!
you can change the time the display stays lit too....check the manual for how to do it

3dcandy I cannot thank you enough. In my haste to play I only half charged the battery and inserted it, thus when I turned off and on it asked me to enter Date/time again. Since fully charging the battery however the issue has been resolved. I have turned off/on removed battery several times and it hasnt asked me again :D

And as for my second point about the screen going off to quickly, I googled it to find this was a default setting that many others have also changed simply by setting the auto-off timer to Long. Now the screen stays much much longer unless of course as JONNY said you autofocus and then it goes off nicely for you.

Thanks again for all your help, this is my first time DSLR after only playing about with my sisters. So I will probably be back soon with more questions.

Ryan x
