Hi guys.

I've googled but can't seem to find a definitive list of lenses to use on a D50. I'm trying to find some nice 2nd hand lenses for my cousins Nikon D50 but i'm unsure as to what he can use.

He doesn't have massive budget so let's assume Sigma or perhaps Tamron (do they make a Nikon range?). It's been made clear in the Wanted section that some Sigma lenses wont Autofocus on the D50/D60.. why is this? Is there a standard i need to look for (like Canon's EF and EFS)? Autofocus is pretty important for him.

Thanks for any help

The D50 doesn't need a motor in the lens so all of the Nikon and Nikon fit aftermarket lenses (after about 1970) will fit and work as intended.
The cameras that do need the motors in the lenses are the D40, D40X, and the D60, the D50 and the D80 of the same era have no requirements in this regard.

So no worries (unless you are mistaken with the model number and he really has a D40).

If he's firmly in the cheap seats some OK lenses that regularly come up for about
£50-70 s/hand are.

Tamron 55-200
Sigma 55-200
Sigma 70-300DG
Nikon 50mm F1.8
Nikon 70-300G

About £130 will get you
Nikon 18-70
Nikon 18-135
Sigma 17-70
Nikkor 55-200VR

I think the 55-200VR makes a nice compliment to the standard 18-55 and getting a 50mm F1.8 at a later date gives you a little budget setup that would do the majority of us most of the time.
