I have a Nikon D5100 with a AF-S DX 35mm lens. I want to take close up pictures of my mouse mat so I can see the weave, texture and any signs of wear for review purposes, however when I select the Macro mode and move the camera close to the object it doesn't focus and only gives a beep when I move the camera further away defeating the point of taking macro shots as I may as well use manual mode.

How do I overcome this problem please? Also note it's not only related to dark surfaces but taking pictures of anything close.

Thanks

DSLRs have no macro mode like compacts.
If you want to shoot macro then you will need to buy a macro lens or Extension rings.
