UPDATE POST 19

Apologies for the bump

We tried them again and the 700d is fine.

However, I saw the Amazon offer for the 600d.

So it's now 600d vs the 700d.

700d with STM 18-55mm IS lens for £520 after cash back.

600d with 18-55 IS II lens and Canon 40mm STM lens for £390 after cash back

Which would people recommend? Thanks in advance as usual.

Ash

Hi guys and girls,

I'm in a dilemma. We (other half and me) cannot choose between them.

  • Nikon D5200 - £500 after cashback - inc 18-55mm VR lens

  • Canon 700d - £535 after cashback - inc 18-55mm STM lens

After watching and reading all reviews, we took the forums advice and just held them. I prefer the Canon with my bigger hands. She prefers the Nikon with smaller hands. And each camera has it's own pros and cons.

So... If it was you, what would you buy? I've searched, I watched reviews, I've read reviews and we still can't decide :(

Thanks in advance as always

Who's paying for it? :-) who ever pays get the choice imo

lol :p We both are and should be fairly equal usage so doesn't come into play really.

Hard to say. The Nikon image really is superior, but the kit lens isn't as good as the Canon's. And the Canon's has STM, which is pretty fast and silent. The touchscreen can also make it much more convenient to focus.

Another thing you should consider is lenses. Once you have the camera you'll eventually be tempted to get other lenses.
35mm, which is standard focal length (what your eyes see) on a crop camera = £140 (Nikon) / £500 (Canon)
50mm (portrait lens on a crop) = £130 (Nikon) / £75 (Canon)

I reckon for most people, the Canon will be the better camera to handle. But Nikon does have the dat superior image, though the difference may be neglible to some.

I think the initial period will see us stick to the kit lens. The thing is we are recording a lot too so the STM Canon seems better. But then she doesn't like the grip and she will be mainly recording (road trips ect).

Ease of use wise, the Canon nails it. But then you can argue you can get used to the Nikons controls.

So many pros and cons of each and they seem equally balanced. Dam it! lol

What about the canon 100d? That's a tiny dslr. Might be too small for your hands

Was considered but too small imo. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Personally I never got on with Nikons controls, but for me the STM lens and the fact that you found it easier would nail it for me. You could be grabbing footage instead of wondering how the hell do I do that...

The thing is, you can get used to a cameras controls eventually (with a lot of practice). On the other hand, a body is never going to get better features over time (unless you upgrade lens).

We are swaying over towards the Nikon but would love more opinions.

The only thing that bothered me about the Nikon was that when recording you would hear the lens but then considering it's cheaper, I could just buy a external mic.

That just leaves the controls. I can get use to the grip. She can't grow bigger hands. D5300 is out soon too which may help pricing.
