Going to be doing a bit of travelling in a few months and I'm after a decent camera to take to snap my adventure and was looking at the Nikon D5300 and was wondering if it's a decent buy?

Cheers.

I spent a long time thinking about the same camera. I went for the D3300 in the end and couldn't be happier. It was over a hundred pounds less, but ditches the wifi and swiveling screen, neither of which I needed or wanted anyway, and so makes the camera cheaper and lighter. Otherwise it's the same camera, more or less. Make sure you buy the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 prime lens, it's amazing and incredibly easy to use, try and get this in place of the kit zoom lens if you can, although that ain't a bad lens either.

The 5300 will take great pictures and is a very capable camera.

A few things to note.

These are not simple cameras and to get the most out of them you need to practice a bit and understand how it all works. Two months is long enough, but taking a new camera on such a trip might end in disappointment (you might be fine but it took me at least a month to get comfortable with mine)

DSLR is also quite heavy and bulky and may also be a target for thieves.
I take mine everywhere (its insured) and I put up with the extra weight.. but sometimes its a pain.

You "may" be better with something smaller and lighter.

DSLR really excel with fast moving subjects and dark environments.
If your mostly taking holiday type snaps in daylight then you may not need DSLR.

What sort of photos are you expecting to take?

Well my first Jaunt is over to Iceland so it will be taking pictures of the caves, waterfalls etc. I'm not one for sitting around on a beach I like to go out and about and explore and see things.

Right so I have settled on the 5300.

My next question is which lens to buy first out of the below?

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens

Cheers!

I took my D5300 with me to Australia and had no issues travelling there for 3 weeks solo - including leaving it in hostel rooms etc

Took some very nice photos with it too - I have the AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.6-5.6 VR lens and it's great for a day to day shooter - bought it from a mate back when I took this camera to Peru on the High Inca Trail!
