Well, after 3 years of ownership of a Nikon D40, I decided it was about time I upgraded to something newer

I was deciding between a 5100 or the D7000 , but in the end I decided from a D40 to the D5100 wasent a worthwhile upgrade, so I went a bit further and ordered a D7000

so who wlse has got one and what did you upgrade from ?

My GF has one one and I try to borrow/steal it whenever I can, it is clearly a massive upgrade even form my D90 and is just an amazingly well balanced camera in terms of features and performance. The DR of the sensor is fantastic.

To put things in perspective, we both sometimes take the cameras together, my GF is learning so will often copy me. I have my D90 setup with a 24-70 on a tripod, timer release etc. She will hand hold with the 18-105 kit lens, comparing images the D7000 is clearly a long way ahead of what my D90 can produce even with better optics and support. The DR advantage is clearly visible in daytime shots. I did some comparison using an ND grad filter on my camera, and using a software gradient in LR with her D7K files, the D7K processed files can maintain better detail and color control than using a a 2 stop ND grad.

Got mine a couple weeks ago to replace by d3100. Dont believe words can describe he step up, cost me £799 so a little gutted to see it on sale now for £725 although its such a great camera i really dont care to much.

Absolutley love using my sigma 17-70 f 2.8/4 on it. Was totally amazed by the difference in IQ over the d3100.

Had mine for a few weeks now and absolutely love it..a big step up from my 3100! I dont know what its like shooting Jpeg because i use RAW but the low light performance is very good and the build quality is lovely. It was a big expense for me but well worth it.

Upgraded from Canon 50D. Love this camera, its so feature packed and can take you as far as you need to go in photography.

It must be Monday already as my D7000 is here!

been at work all day, but just had a quick run through the menus etc and blimey lots more features, and different wording to the D40, love the idea onf the LCD at the top of the camera that the full frame oones seem to have.

The layout is a little different, bigger and heavier (due to the D40 not having a motor for the lens) all in all, i think i might be pleased, off to goodwood tommorow, hopeing to take some good pics with it!

I was so close to getting the D7K, very nice camera indeed, all the Nikon 'flair' with superb performance..

All the top end APS-C cameras are absolute peaches, you can't really go wrong..

I get the feeling the D7K is due for replacement soon, maybe the new 24MP sensor (ala D3200?)

hmm, just took some shots, same subject, same distance, same lens, and the d7000 ones are blured and the d40 ones are fine

i can only assume the viewfinder has a wheel that makes it in or out of focus, it could be out slightly?

using a 70-300 VR lens at 300 at the time

Still a great camera and it's down to a nice price now (just under £725). I don't see any reason to buy something like the Canon 60D over this.

The only negative thing about it is the grip. It felt too 'square' when I tried one a while ago. I prefer the grips to be more rounded and have a bit of an indent(s) for your fingers.

I "Think" i now know why...

my D40's ISO is set to 200, and for some reason its on AUTO (no idea how to change it to auto) i have never realised that ive been shooting at different ISO's

i managed to check the image data , and at this time of night, shotting at ISO 100 on my D7000 came up quite dark! so i was going WTF! lol

so i guess thats a contributing factor, becuase it thinks theres not much light the shutter speed dropped, so it was doing 1/5 at ISO 100

I'm still umming and arring over replacing my 400D but I haven't found anything yet that I can justify it over.

Not sure I want another base level camera but a lot of the prosumer cameras are too big for my liking (backpacking) and Canon's range just don't do it for me. What is the Canon version of the D7000 at the moment and how do they perform over each other? I assume it isn't weather sealed or anything like that?

Go into auto iso, and set your minimum shutter speed you feel comfortable hand holding.

I'd say the D7000 is nearer to the Canon 7D than the cheaper 60D.

The D7000 has weather and moisture sealing from what I know.

I'd say the d7000 is above the 7D in all applications other than where buffer depth and FPS are of critical importance. And while the 7d is advertised as being weather sealed, it's still not up to the same standard as the D7000, which seems to be a trend with regards to Canon Vs Nikon weather sealing...
