Damn, loos really sweet. Wasn't expecting the 51pt Pro-AF or no AA filter. not sure i will bother with a D800e considering the price difference. Ad for a d800 I would really need to buy a new supertelephoto like the 500mm f4.0, which I just don't have the budget for.

Just been thinking, refurbished D600 can be picked up over here for $1600, the d7100 body only is supposedly $1200. This combo to me would beat the D800/e I think, d800e is $3000, can get some $2700 refurbished but a reasonable chance of getting an early returned model with left AF issue not corrected.

FF D600 for portrait/people/event, landscape, architecture.
DX d7100 for wildlife and going lighter (travel, hiking, walkabouts).

The D800e mostly achieves both of these but has some limits. 36MP is hard to achieve in landscape situations due to diffraction, PC lenses are important. 36Mp works well for wildlife, but the advantage is really only there is you can afford the longer lenses. E.g. If I use my same 300mm f4.0 +1.4xTC then the d7100 should provide moose pixels-per-moose under most situations. The d7100 will provide better AF coverage than d600 or d800.

Keeping a DX body means I can keep all of my DX lenses. The d600 will make friends with my 24-70. Hmm, coud buy the d600 soon, get the d7100 later after first price drop, ee ping my d90 going until then.

Quite happy Nikon is in a trend of leaving out AA filters. I guess with such a high pixel density on APSC there is no need.
The AF is surprising to, I guess this is supposed to replace the D300 as well.

Cheer!!

been waiting for this.
now to decide on an upgrade to my aging D40.
The D7100 or the D600

oh wow that looks like a great little camera, time to shift on the D300 I think. Just wondering how many lenses will be able to keep up with the sensor though? I read that the 24-70 was very soft on the D800, will things like a 300/4 + tc keep up with a 24mp no aa crop sensor?

The only lenses I've got left right now are the 70-200 vrII, 16-85 vr and a sigma 105 macro. There's no way the 16-85 will cope, it's already often soft on 12mp.

I still think a d300 replacement is on the cards but surpisided it wasn't announced before d7100. There is need of an 8-10 FPS large buffer DX. Camera for sports togs.

Your 16-85 might be mis calibrated as it should be pin sharp on 12mp Dx, certainy is in mine. It is also very sharp on 16Mp Nikon's but you start to notice the difference. Certainly at this pixel density a pot of care is needed with lenses and diffraction will be a real pain. Seems much more like a camera to use with lenses left fairly wide open, not to be used for landscape work at f11 and lower.

Still, even if the 100% view is soft when printing at same sized outputs it will be sharper than any 12-16Mp sensors. From digital signal processing theory we know that if we want to guarantee to reconstruct the complete anaologue signal (light going through lens) we need to sample at twice that frequency. E.g if the lens is passing 3000LP then the sensor should measure twice that to be able to fully reconstruct the source signal (or if the lens has a resolution of around 20Mp, digital sampling at 40mp is required to guarantee not loosing information).

The 24-70 is very sharp on a d800, you just notice the softer corners wide open when viewed at 100%.

The Nikon 24-70 2.8G is sharper on the D800 than the 24-70 2.8L MKII on a 5D3.

It should be considering the resolution of the sensor is far higher....

Have a read

The Canon 24-70 mk ii is a sharper lens than the Nikon.

It is impossible to compare the D800 sensor to the 5D Mkiii sensor, they're completely different. If they were the same or equivilent tech then I would be interested to see how the lens+camera combination compare.

As for the Nikon D7100 - very nice camera.

Yes that's where I got my data from. Not sure what point your making, did you even read the post above that I was replying to???

Purely based on the specs and the experience of how good the D7000 was this looks to be an amazing camera for the price. I'm not really seeing anything I don't like about it so far. Very surprised to see the pro AF in it and no AA filter. Very nice indeed. It will be good to see some real world photos and reviews pour out soon.

Is the 7d due for replacement soon?

Possible update to the canon 7d......? Touch slower fps, nicer screen more AF points, interesting camera. Still like having the options given by an articulated screen.

edit: would say the 7D is due an update (2009)

Actually the Nikon is probably the sharper of the 2, especially over the central frame area:

Canon center wide open is at the 35-39LPMM level, Nikon is at the 39-47LPMM level

FF edge, Canon is at 25-28LPMM, Nikon is at 27-28LPMM at 24 &45mm, but 23LPMM at 70mm, stopping down to f4/0 the canon is at 38-43LPMM, the Nikon at 39-43LPM.

So both almost identical at frame edge, the Nikon is sharper in the center, quite significantly so wide open at all focal lengths.

More pro orientated, but an eye watering $2200.

Does look like Nikon will make a D400, faster FPS and bigger buffer D7100, hopefully in a full pro body like the D4. Can sit somewhere in the $2000 range.
