I am having trouble making my mind up which camera is the best choice, the Nikon D7100 or Canon 7D? It's a new hobby me, so no lenses etc purchased yet so the field is open.

What are your "for" & "against" thoughts please?

The choice should be nikon d7100 or canon 70d, the 7d's getting on a bit now.
70d has a flippy screen so useful for low or high shots.
Can you go to a shop to handle them both?
What are you going to be shooting.

The 7100 has more focus points (51 points, 9 are cross type) , more dynamic range ,better image quality, slightly bigger viewfinder with more coverage

The 70d has more cross type focus points (19 points ,all cross type), flip out touch screen , 1 fps faster shooting , higher iso

My choice would be the 7100 for the better focus system, iq and dynamic range

If speed is your thing, a 7D is still very good, especially as you can get one for about £500. 8fps is very nice!

I agree that you should go and handle them both, to see which you pefer the feel of. Also watch as many videos as you can.I'm sure you'll come to a decision quite easily once you've done those things!

Good luck!

Thank you all.

I think it will be the 7100 as I like what I have read/seen so far. I will be taking the advice and go and handle them tomorrow just to be sure. Its then a case of where to buy from? I have seen the 7100 for just under £600 on 1 site with a 3 year warranty. It sounds too good to be true?

WEX are very good, Jessops price match too, and John Lewis offer longer warranties than both as standard for extra lenses (you get 2 years on all Nikon cameras when you register it on the Nikon site).

WEX want £979 with the 18-105 and offer 12 months interest free.
Jessops want £979 with 6 months interest free
John Lewis want £979 with no interest free, but the joy of a John Lewis shopping experience if you go in store (no upselling, no crap, just what you want!)

Most important thing is to hold both, find out how to adjust aperture, shutter speed and ISO, how to switch between manual, shutter priority and aperture priority, see how each feels in the weight, the build.

If you are less worried about returns, try digitalrev who are excellent. They want £800 for the D7100 with 18-105mm kit, but it'll be a grey import. They offer a warranty service of sort but read up on it before you buy. I've used them before though and was very pleased.

Also, they have Kai Man Wong, Lok Cheung and Alamby Leung doing their videos and I quite enjoy them but Kai is an odd character so not all can stand him lol.

Their videos on the

Personally I prefer to pick big purchases up so that I know that I can take it back and talk to someone if I have a problem. I got my D7100 delivered from WEX as it was a insurance claim so I didn't have a choice :(.

The only other things I'd suggest is downloading Lightroom from Adobe once you have some images and a good solid few hours to learn the bare basics of Lightroom. It's a free 30 day trial and you can then buy a copy for about £60 if you shop around, or if you wanted sign up for the Adobe CC Photography offer which they just extended to the end of this month where for £105 speard over 12 months, you get Lightroom and Photoshop.

Lightroom is where you catalogue your photos, add keywords, develop them, export them to flickr or facebook or anywhere else easily.

Thank you for taking the time to send such a comprehensive and helpful reply. That is very much appreciated.:)

I picked my D7100 up from Jessops in Nottingham a few months back and received fantastic service.
If you're thinking of doing aviation photography I'd carefully consider your lens choice. I have an 18-140 and though it's adequate I wish I'd gone for something with a bit more reach.

For aviation you'll probably want at least 300mm on crop.

i really hope canon released a good 7D MKii

otherwise i will be regretting my choice to go canon late last year

I got my 7100 from London camera exchange in Nottingham, they were cheapest anywhere (even online) and were and have been excellent.
