Nikon is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop being such a drama queen.

Why Nikon? Go Sony ;)

If Sony sold cameras with a Nikon or canon mount it would be fun, oh wait, I can buy a a camera that has all the best bits of Nikon and Sony put together that natively accepts Nikon lenses:D

On a more serious note, the problem with Sony is there is not clear future or direction. I mean, what the heck is happening at their high end, their A900/800 was released ages ago and is the last thing we have ever seem form them! And who know what the heck kind of viewfinder they are going to settle on, I certainly don't want to buy into a system where I might be forced to use an EVF on future bodies. And although Sony have the fundamental lenses covered there is a still a huge backlog of more specialized lenses we need to wait for (lots of tele exotics, fat primes, TS, more macros, cheap but good primes, etc.). And then thee is the fact that Sony Alpha division is not really making much profit and has failed to take the market share that they claimed years back.

Shame, because Sony cameras are quite nice, they are trying different technologies, their sensor tech is fab, it would be nice to have a major 3rd player.:(

Well I'd like Kyocera to go buy a sensor from Sony and bring back the Contax range with the Carl Zeiss lenses. Obviously no chance......

All this obsession with the latest tech makes me smile. I'm actually leaving my 5d in the cupboard and taking the old Contax kit out.

It makes me think more about the picture and how I need to make it work. It's also more rewarding and enjoyable to use..... Plus shows even old kit can take just as a good picture....

Sony have an A99 coming soon which will be full frame; current rumours point to it doing full 102 cross point AF and having an ISO hotshoe rather than the Minolta one presently used. The viewfinder is a compromise of the SLT tech. Unless they switch back to SLR (unlikely, imo), they will have to stick with EVF.

Cheap but good primes? Minolta 50mm 1.7 is better than a lot of other cheap primes, the Sony 35mm can be picked up second hand for £100 and is not half bad.

Sony have their flaws, but they arn't that bad!

If go by the thinking of some people here that Canon is at the bottom of a cesspool, Sony is probably above it :p

Honestly i think your a little paranoid Ray.
Havn't seen anyone say that Canon are terrible, the facts are (imo) however that currently they are behind Nikon's offerings. That doesn't make them bad in the same way the D2H wasn't a bad camera at the time either.

I've never disputed the D800 being the better offering, however some people can't tell the difference between better and bad. Just because one is better in certain areas it does not make the competition terrible. Reading his post in the past week it gives you the impression that Canon bodies can't focus, photos are all blur, would self short circuit from moisture in the air and explode in your face.

Me, I like a challenge :p a MF lens just landed on my desk!

I love Canon but seriously the 5dMK3 is a crock of ****. Nikon clearly put time and effort into the D800 something Canon seemed to of forgotten about when they decided to make a £2.5K camera thats nowhere near worth it.

It's kept me amused reading both threads

Holy war will probably break out if Canon release a marginally better body than Nikon in the next refresh :D

All this comparing of (pointless) specs and camera war makes me laugh.... Think more people should go buy a few rolls of 35mm film and a 30 year manual SLR and learn how to take pictures with out all this technology ;)

I'm game!

Well, can I not just use my 13 years old Eos 30? :p

Have some out of date slide film in the freezer too!

I never said they were bad, they just don't compare to Canon or Nikon and don't offer me or many pros anything of interest. I think you will find in my post I was actually very positive about Sony, why is it that when i say 1 or 2 negative things about a camera/company that some fans of said camera/company become so agitated?

Sony are trying to innovate a lot, although I dislike their EVF/SLT approach it is nice to have competition and innovation. Nikon-Canon basically try to do the same thing and are actually known to share some technologies, which is why their bodies are often so similar (unless they take a camera in a clearly different direction like the 5dMKII vs D700).

If i look at the Sony lens line up against my desired lenses there is nothing like the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 (or a 16-35/ f/4.0 type lens), there are no good fast primes like the 50mm and 85mm Nikon f/1.8 G lenses, the longest macro is 100mm (I really want Nikon's 200m f/4.0 macro), there are no tilt-shifts at all. The Sony 500mm f/4.0 is $5000 more expensive than the Nikon (will be my Christmas present) , there is no 300mm f/4.0 which is my most used lens ATM. And although Sony's EVF is reasonable I certainly would not choose it over an OVF at this stage.

So for me there is clearly little reason to buy into the Sony system. Sony lost 1/3rd of a billion dollars last quarter, they will be looking to cut costs, which would be their high end camera division. i wouldn't be surprised if Sony focuses on NEX + small SLT cameras. Scratch that, that is is basically what they have already started doing. Which is fine, at this level Sony is a beast with very nice offerings.

Does it have to be 30 years old or can i buy my dream Fuji gx617?

I've been a Sony A77 owner for a while now and previous to that I had a D80 / D90 so I can say I'm in a position to compare.

I cant say I have a single moment where I've thought that the glass choice available for Sony's is in anyway inferior to Nikon's lineup.

Sony's 35mm & 50mm f1.8 offerings are just a sharp as the Nikon offering but people discount them because its got a plastic mount which I find hilarious.

Additionally Tamron, Sigma and Tokina make some awesome glass for the Sony system as well as the older Minolta lenses all being fully compatible the range is rather large.

I personally own 3 Tamron lenses, 1 Sigma and 2 Sony and all of them are very comparable to the Nikon counterparts.

I have a Sony 18-250mm and I actually prefer it to that Nikon 18-200mm VR that I had.

Also I'm pretty sure that the Sony's financial loss was nearly all attributed to the TV production dept and thats where that cuts mostly fell.

The A99 FF SLT is also widely rumoured to be on the brink of being announced and released this year so that would be 2 high end bodies in consecutive years. Not really typical of a company thats cutting back is it?
