Before I post some up, am I allowed to ask other forum members for their opinion on prices for some Nikon gear?

Naturally I have no intention of posting any links to competitors. ;)

Yes you can say "Is this Nikon D80 for 20p worth buying?" Of course the Canon fanboys will say no :D

I have the following options:-

1) D200 with a 1Gb Card and a D200 Battery Pack for £917
2) D80 with a MB-D80 Battery pack and a AF-S DX 18-135 f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens for £693 (or £527 for just the body)

I have two Nikon lenses already, DX 18-70mm (came with D70) and AF-ED 80-210mm. These were previously used on my D70 which was errrrrr.....dropped! :o

What would the Nikon experts recommend?

Nope, prices are direct from Nikon themselves, just not Nikon UK ;)

Anyway, I'd like some opinions as to what you guys think is the best offer and why I should go for it.

All I can say is that IF I had the money I would go for the D80 ! It's got brilliant reveiws everywhere, rpactical photographer gave it 5 stars in it's last issue.

Looks like a brilliant camera especially for the price!

Got my 21st bday coming up this month, one can only hope right? :p

Depends what you will be using the camera for. Someone I know has just bought a D200, great piece of kit, shot a few pics with it. However its a semi pro camera with the price tag to go with it. The D80 is more an amatures camera which uses a lot of the D200 functions, just scaled down a bit. If cost is not an issue I would go for the D200, it uses CF memory cards, I guess you still have some left over from your D70 (sorry to hear you dropped it), the D80 uses SD cards so you need to consider this. Hope this helps anyway and not just a load of garbled mess :)

Thanks for the opinions, I'm interested in whether or not the lens with the D80 kit is actually worth it (additional £166 but does also include a battery kit). I can't seem to find a review for the lens itself. Im also questioning whether I really need the lens as well.

Interesting point about the cards, I didn't realise that.

I think you have think about the lens cost more then the body.

You might get £50-100 cheaper for uber body but in the long run if you want Premium nikon glass, it will come very very expensive. Most costing £200 more then Canon equivalent.

Also with Canon you get wider choice e.g 70-200L F4 or 70-200L F2.8 or with IS etc etc.
Looking at people lens collection a lot of ameture Nikon user tend to have third party lenses because it is cheap while the most Canon users will have at least 1 L glass in their collection.

If you can afford the expensive lenses to go with the D200/80 go for it because I personally think the Nikon body/handling/image is so much better then most competitors.

That's what I was thinking. You may have missed my earlier post but I already have two Nikkor lenses (previously had a D70 until I dropped it):-

Question is; do I go for the D80 kit with the lens (etc), or do I stick with the lenses I currently have and go for the D200 body (etc)?

Both come with the 'bolt on' battery pack which I rather like the idea of.

Soon as I can raise the pennies, I'm upgrading my D50 to a D80, purely on the basis of the reviews it got. Not that the D50 is that bad, it's just natural progression.....

I've picked up Tamrons excellent 28-75mm f/2.8 XR LD Di (and a thousand other letters!) and a Sigma 70-200mm EX f/2.8, plus a 1.4 Teleconvertor. Along with my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, all I'm looking for now is a 10-20mm, and I'm done (for now!)

I'd say go for it :)

I have seen a lot of Canon users with Sigma's and Tamrons. It applies for both. You will find that a 3rd party lens is lot cheaper compared to the OEM's equivilent. This is why people buy them. My recent purchase, a Sigma 100 - 300 f4, couldnt be matched by either Canon or Nikon for the price and performance. Review results even show better resolution figures/contrast, etc compared to the OEM's. The way you have put the above is that if you buy 3rd party you get cheap, it just isnt true anymore. Infact, I have seen people buy DSLR body only deals from high street retailers and opting for 3rd party 'kit' lens' over the OEM. Purely on the grounds that the OEM's budget/prosumer lens' are generally plasticy.

Back on topic, personally, as you have an 18 - 70 DX and other Nikkor lens' go for the D200 and battery grip. The D80 is a baby D200 but a good camera all the same but not as good as the D200.

the 3rd part lenses are not bad or anything but its good to have some quality 1st party lens to go with your body.

When I had my Nikon I really wanted e.g 17-55 but just couldn't spend £900 on 1 lens.

reddeathdrinker, I miss the 70-200 so much :( , I need to buy 70-200L f4, when my bank balance is more healthy.

Back to topic, go for D200 because the handling and functions are soo much better. it would be shame to stick 18-70 on such a excellent body.

I think I shall opt for the D80 body only (£527). I've read many reviews and compared the D80 to the D200. As King_Boru pointed out, the D80 is in effect a 'mini' D200. I don't value the D200 being worth the additional £400 (approx), not for my needs anyway.

I will however, invest the money I will save in buying a Nikkor AF-S DX 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED lens (for £564), which means I'll spend a little bit more, but I think the investment in glass is more prudent than the body, it's also a lens that I would dearly love to have. I wasn't impressed with what I read about the AF-S DX 18-135 f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens and I have lenses that cover that range already.
