This is a great free tethering solution. I have been using DIY Photobits for a couple of years but this one is far better. Many more options, better UI and includes using Liveview.

im using controlmynikon 4.2 at the moment its not free but I got it when it was on offer for $19

I use dslrDashboard for setting up 6-9 multiple exposures and it is free. My other software is Helicon Remote, but you have to pay £30 for raw format saving. The tethered software with my Android phone is great for letting me focus the camera properly when I have it sitting in hard to view areas, such as a small rock in the middle of a rock pool.
