I have a sudden urge to buy a Nintendo DS, or 3DS - but I don't know which I should go for?

Obviously the 3DS has the better screen and is newer, but are there any major improvements in the 3DS over the DS?

Bear in mind that the primary reason for wanting one is the very recent (today) discovery of this:

Chrono Trigger is possibly my all-time favourite RPG, and I haven't played it in YEARS since I owned a SNES. It needs to be replayed.

The 3DS is known to give headaches to most people due to the 3D, It does look great and is backward compatibility to DS games. but there are many choices of games on DS too.

I personally have a NDS lite and have enjoyed so much from it.

Cant you just turn the 3d off though?

I'd go for the 3DS.
The 3DS is a whole new system and more powerful. Not just a DS with 3D.

New games that are designed for the 3DS won't work on the old DS so you would be missing out on future games.

My son has the 3DS and loves it, backwards compatible and you can turn off the 3D if it causes problems...
The only gripe he has is the loss of pictochat. I know swapnote or letterbox is supposed to replace it but the fun came from communicating with the other kids in the house who all still have plain DS's :(

I'd suggest a 3DS even though you don't actually need it - the improved screen is enough.

You might want to consider the DS XL for the bigger screen, or even fork out for the 3DS XL, if they've released it yet.

I was going to suggest the Vita, but the PS version of CT was apparently poo.

Well if it is possible to turn 3D off if needed then go for 3DS, even more titles on it too along with the DS ones :)

lol, if money was no object I'd just get the most expensive 'DS' available.

Thing is, I'm probably only going to use it for the 1 game, so I'm trying to decide if the bigger screen is worth it.

Working on seeing if I can borrow a DS if any of my friends have one, then at least I'll get a feel for the controls and screen size.

Shame GAME is dead, or I'd have asked in there. Might dare try the purple shirt circus.

There have been DS lites going for £35 on MM before now. If it's only for one game then I'd say the DS lite would be my choice. Yeah it's not got the bigger screen but you get much better battery life than a 3DS, it costs a fraction of the price of a 3DS and as an added plus you get access to all the awesome GBA RPGs such as The Golden Sun series.

Picked up a 2nd hand DS in silver for £20, locally. :)

Got Chrono Trigger last night, and had a test out - just as fantastic as I remember it from the SNES :D

Now to master how to have up to 3-person RPG battles with a whole host of bosses and other nasties :)
