Been asked to buy a DS for my friends daughter who is 6.

My friend has already bought some DS games so my first question is do all DS games work in all versions of DS?

And 2nd, is there a specific one to get? One better than the others etc?

Thanks!

1)Yes

2)Get the DSi or DSi XL. If you can stretch the cash a little, get a 3DS as they play DS games and well as the 3DS games.

3DS or the original DS?

Only reason for mentioning is that I'm not sure the Nintendo DS is still officially available to buy in the UK. In short:

  • The DS/DS Lite will play DS games.
  • The DSi/DSi XL will play DS and DSi enhanced games (there aren't many of these - Pokemon Black & White is an example of one).
  • The 3DS/3DS XL & 2DS will play all 3DS, DS and DSi games.

Probably not going to be relevant here but the only thing to be mindful of is whilst all Nintendo DS consoles are region free (so play games from the US, Japan etc.) Nintendo DSi enhanced games are region-protected. And the newer 3DS console is region protected as well.

I think the 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS are all officially available to buy at the moment where the main difference is the XL has bigger screens and the 2DS drops the ability to switch on '3D' but can still play all 3DS games.

Difficult to recommend specific hardware becuase there will be reasons for liking one over the other and pricing differences. But personally I have a DSi XL and 3DS XL becuase I prefer the bigger screens but this means the machines lose some of their portability. For the original the newer DSi and DSi XL would be a better choice, partly due to the improved LCD screens.

Also I'm sure it doesn't matter to the girl, but there is a "New 3DS" coming out in the New Year, a subtly enhanced 3DS. There are already some games announced that will not work on 3DS (e.g. Xenoblade Chronicles).

Get the 3DS bud - don't worry about the 3D part of it as that can be switched off and pin protected to help protect the little 'uns eyes.

Reason I say get a 3DS is that there's not many new games on the older DS or DSi models - all the new games seem to be 3DS titles (My 7yr old daughter wanted Lego City hence why I recently upgraded her DSi to the 3DS XL).

I'd recommend 3DS if you're happy to pay the extra money, they're great little consoles (I have a 3DS XL, my cousin has a standard 3DS) plus the colours you can buy them in are awesome - personal favourite is the blue (although my XL is black hehe).

Also, a 3DS XL would be far too big for a 6 year old as far as useability is concerned.
