Is the DS and its game region locked ? I'm thinking of picking one up when I'm in Vancouver, but don't want to if I can't get games when I'm back in the UK.

Nope, as simo182 says, they're not region locked. However, with regards the Nintendo Wi-fi online play, some of the games will try looking for servers in their respective country, so if you import a Japanese game it'll try looking for online servers in Asia/Pac even though you might be playing the game in Europe. I believe this is why some high street stores won't accept imported DS games for trade-in.

Not all games are like this though.

Aye. I'm fairly sure that my US Metroid finds Eur. servers, so it does vary.

Is there any incompatibility with local wifi play? I remember the original Hunters demo wouldn't work outside of region locally.

No region locking but the charger will be North American 100-110v/60hz so you'll need a UK charger when you get back.. or a usb charger cable.
