Brisk sales of the DS and DS Lite portable game systems and the latest Super Mario video game have boosted Nintendo's quarterly profits by 10.2%.

The Japanese console maker made 15.6bn yen ($134.3m; £105.8m) in the three months to June 2006.

It has now revised its profits up by 14% to 125bn yen for 2006.

Top selling games during the quarter included Brain Training for Adults and New Super Mario Bros, the latter of which has topped US games charts for the past two months.

Key to success

Figures earlier this month showed that in 2005, Nintendo sold 2.6 million units of its handheld DS Lite and a further 1.3 million of the original DS.

Sony sold less than a million of its PlayStation portable. Nintendo also made the best-selling game, Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?

I bought a ds lite and I very rarely if ever buy consoled one of things that made me buy the ds lite was the brain training not only am i hooked on it I can get some time to my self while the wife is doing her training and soduku:)

Great news for Nintendo although not too surprising as they virtually own the handheld market and the DS seems to be the best product they have launched in a long time both in terms on innovation and games available.

havent ninty always made profit on every console theyve sold, im not suprised they always report profits, and with their best bit of kit yet, the DS lite storming the market, no wonder profits are soaring

by my calculations that suggest Nintendo's profits are over half a billion pounds this year

Maybe they could offer to loan some to Sony at a good rate of interest? ;):p

Aye people write nintendo off too easily, they have a HOOOOOGE home market in Japan and make cash on every single Hardware sale. They also have a huge lead in the handheld market. Add software to that and it's no surprise :)

Well as it might not be a shock it is good news though.

The computer games industry needs a least 3 strong console manufacturers to offer us the consumers choice and at the same time pushing each other to make better consoles and games.
