Nintendo Switch 2nd user warranty..

I was looking for a Switch for my daughters but couldn’t justify spending the £300+ it was going to cost me for the console plus a game. So, I looked for a second hand console and found many of the at reasonable prices but on calling Nintendo CS in the UK, I was told that Nintendo do not warranty any consoles that have been purchased by a 3rd party. When you send a faulty console back to Nintendo, you apparently HAVE to send a valid proof of purchase (shop receipt) and the name on the receipt MUST match your name.
This, in effect, means that anyone buying a used Switch in the UK can never make a sucessful warranty claim even if the console is only a couple of months old and has a valid receipt and if you get a console without a receipt, according to Nintendo CS, they won’t touch it regardless!
Can anyone confirm this please? Kids want a console but we’re just not lucky with this stuff and somehow the electronics always seem to develop faults post-purchase!
I know Nintendo can be the kings of scummy business practices but can they really be this bad?
 
Hmm, not sure about that. Game specifically told me that after 28 days, you would have to contact Nintendo and they would arrange return etc and deal directly with you.
 
Also as the purchase/transation/contract is between the retailer and the person that bought it, so retailers can choose not to honor it if they want to deny responsibility.

If the retailer openly acknowledge/declare that they only require prove of purchase and don't care about who bought it from them, then that's different.

I guess it's really down to the company policy.
 
Nintendo are within their right to follow this as a policy. Which I know is not great, but its irrelevant.

As a manufacturer they are only legally bound to offer a warranty. However what the warranty entails is soley up to them. The good part here is that you (unlike most unsuspecting consumers) have checked this before buying.

The warranty Nintendo offer under the above could be as silly as: "if you device breaks within the warranty period, we will replace it with a Banana".

The Sale of goods act however protects consumers when purchasing goods. But the responsibility to resolve this is between the retailer and the consumer as the contract of sale exists between these parties.

As long as you have the receipt I'm pretty sure Nintendo will be fine, I don't know many shops where your name would be on the receipt but worst case you just pretend to be that person.
 
That’s a really good point but you’ll be surprised just how many people simply don’t keep receipts for purchases like this. When I asked sellers if they have a purchase receipt, the usual reaction is a variation of “why the hell would I do that?”
I honestly can’t be arsed with this. My Zelda-crazy kids just want to play Breath of the Wild and other Zelda games, so we’ve bought a mint 32gb Wii U with a few controllers and a couple of games for £70, BOTW for £30 and am plugging it all in for them today.
I would have bought a Switch but just didn’t fancy getting rogered by Nintendo..

Based on OP's post, Nintendo does seem to honor their manufacturer warranty, however it does seem to be the case of only for the 1st/original purchaser of the product (and documents/proofs to are required to show that the person requesting for the warranty repair/replacement is one and the same as the person that bought it).
