It coes with two joycons which are wither one full controller, or they can be used as two smaller controllers. How much you'd want a second pad or not would be determined by the players and games

The joycons are probably fine for kids playing mario kart. for adults you'd prbably want to pick up either a second set or a pro / wired controller

I played Mario Kart online every night for about a year and a half. I have over 500 hours clocked playing that amazing game. Pro controller is a lovely thing. Expensive but I wouldn't be without one.

Also recommend a pro controller if possible. Wired solutions also not bad for the occasional multiplayer setup
