Came across one of these today and spoke to the guy afterwords. What a HUUUGE car, but tiny inside.

Open empty dual carrageway in between 2 roundabouts up a slight hill. He had a passenger.

Cheated a bit and got the jump off the first roundabout. He was definitely catching me up, but not as fast as you'd think, and not in time before we had to break for the next roundabout. I'd say this was almost half a mile in between roundabouts. Same story again on the next section of road.

Pulled over and spoke to him and he's a top bloke who was genuinely interested in the car.

Had a third pull with him and went on a signal. I was in 2nd and he began to creep away, then I missed third gear and he was away.

Good encounter, and the first one I've seen on the road.

Very impressive car ..... oh and i WANT one :D :thumb-up:

... Oh dear what have I done :D

Actually lets be honest. Everyone knew what would happen here. It's amusing all the same. Had to do it.

Maybe so but he had to brake to 0 mph for the roundabout and both of us weren't braking hard.

He's getting more ambitious in each race. Is it going to be a Veyron next?

If you don't believe me, come to the rolling road day I'm organising and ask him for yourself?

Dastek, Dalgety Bay
29th August.

Bit of a trek to be proven wrong, mind.

Also I guess it must be a lot more friendly in Scotland than down South. If someone in an old, albeit fast, car pulled over to speak to me after having sat on my chuff up to illegal speeds, in what might appear a menacing and aggressive driving manner, the last thing I would do is pull over to speak to you. I would fear for being stabbed in the face and car jacked. :p

1. He followed me into an industrial estate, not the other way around, and got out and started asking about the car.
2. I never said I had a faster car. Of course I don't, and all things being equal he would pull away. What I did say was that given a jump on the GTR it took him quite a long time to catch up.
3. I never said my car is better, faster or more desirable than the GTR. It ISN'T. I also specifically said how impressed I was with it, and I want one.
4. He was at WOT.
5. A lot of you guys need to chill out.

With regards to a build log, I haven't really got one, but the rough specs are:

* Standard 1.8 BP Engine
* BEGI S3 Turbo Kit, which includes cast manifold, GT2554R turbo, seperated gasses stainless downpipe, Front mount intercooler
* Megasquirt ECU which provides flat ****, launch control, electronic boost control, full spark adjustment etc.
* RC 550cc Injectors
* All the other bits and bobs that go along with an install like this. 2.5" exhaust, decat, forge recirc valve, uprated clutch, torsen LSD (standard).

Sorry BigT, all the points weren't aimed at you. You were the only one I quoted though.

It was quite clear he was being friendly, we both gave the thumbs up and he was clearly having fun. Not sure where the car jacking people are coming from. Things are obviously very different where you are.

seems op actually has a quite nippy mx5, but I bet one thing for sure, the GTR owner doesn't keep his car in a gazebo :D

Haha, it was only built under the Gazebo. It now resides in the (now cleared garage).

And don't diss the Gazebo, that cost me a small fortune. £12 from Asda.

Sorry guys I'm not looking for an argument. Everyone who knows about cars will realise what they're capable of. I'll keep it to myself in future.

Just thought some people would like to hear a wee story about a run in with one of the most talked about cars in years. I was certainly interested in the GTR and very nice it was.

And regarding that video, MJT is right. There's no way he's got 270rwhp if thats what he's quoting and without sounding like even more of a tit, I'd say my 5 is considerably quicker than that.

I posted a video a while ago actually, but its not the best quality.

To answer your question Fett, I'd say to do it right buying NEW parts to get to 250 rwhp (~ 285 bhp) at the flywheel you're looking at around £3-4k, which I've broken down like this:

Turbo Kit ~ £2400
ECU £500
Datalogging equipment like wideband air fuel, intake air temp sensors £250
Injectors £300
Clutch £250
Other stuff £££'s

Obviously you can do it on the cheap by looking out for 2nd hand parts etc, but it would be impossible to guess how much it would cost you. It depends how patient / lucky you are.

I despise this comment.

Why do you despise it?

DrDee - The handling is actually a hoot. Its pretty much glued to the road grip wise in the dry once the tyres are warm, but if you want to play, power oversteer is available. You still feel in touch with the road, and the car is even more playful. I'll be ordering different suspension in the next 2 weeks once funds are sorted and I make up my mind between Gaz Gold Pro and P5 Sportdrive.

If you're asking does the FI ruin the handling, the answer is no. It feels like it makes the car come alive. I always thought the standard one had a great chassis but didn't have the engine to exploit it properly.

Cheers for that, shall pass it on to my brother, I'm assuming miataturbo.net is the next port of call for him.

I found your video, but like you said, it's not too clear. You should really get a couple of crisp runs on film, through the gears for posterity (stick the phone down with something)...up to 130-140 would be good or try that dynolicious app perhaps. Bit of solid evidence and all that, obviously it's hard to find times for a 30-70 (etc) times for a modified car compared to a mag-tested standard one.

It's obviously quick from your 1/4 time, but if the feller was only creeping away from you or slowly catching up at a ton++, it's far, far quicker at the thick end than I would have imagined. Impressed.

edit: what's its limit?

Lets be honest. The GTR was definetely quicker by some margin, but you need a huge amount of power to reel in a fast car that gets a jump on you.

No doubt the gearing helps the cause, and I'd imagine the top speed will be limited by the rev limiter in 5th gear. I haven't done a top speed run but I'd guess around 130 mph or so.

If you are ever in or around N.Wales, please drop me an email. Would love to see what it does in the flesh if you are up for a passenger :)

You're kidding.... you'd kill my power to weight :D

Just messing. Same goes for you if you're up around central Scotland. I doubt I'll be down in wales in the 5 to be honest. I'd have a head ache by the time I reached England. Such is the nature of the car.

On a side note, the owner of the GTR should be attending the rolling road meet I've organised for the end of August. He mentioned he'd replaced the 'Y' pipe if that means anything to you. I'm certainly interested to see what power it makes, as I've heard people say the 480bhp seems a bit low. The noise will be something else too.

Fett how does your GTR compare the the 55 AMG? I always remember the sound of an SL55AMG gunning past with the roof down. It sounded like thunder. Awesome noise.
