looking for a nippy family car - and Nissan Jukes have come up on the radar

was going to look at one at a local Nissan dealer this weekend- but wondered if any owners on here had any opinions ?

I'm not that fond on the looks - but to be honest the looks aren't that important to me

I'd be looking at the 1.6 Dig-T - which looks to be warm hatch quick with 190hp, but whats the handling like ?

the Jukes - even at dealers - seem a lot of car for the money

cheers

We have a basic one and it's great, it has small rear seats so don't think you'll be getting two child seats and an adult in there but as I found out tonight pretty much the same as the Evoque. The boot is tiny.

The diving position is good, my wife loves it, we are getting about 36mpg out of the 1.6 petrol and as tonight I chucked it about the back lanes and it's a like a go-kart but higher, good fun.

thanks -sounds promising (apart from the space part ....)

we'd have 2 kids in the back - one is 5 the other 8 - but we wouldn't expect to use the seat between

we've currently 2 Civics (a MB6 - mine, and a newer Type-S (2005 style)) - don't need any larger than that really - we find it plenty for going away etc

My mum has one. Don't let the outside impression of size deceive you. It's smaller inside than a Micra. We did a run to the airport and we got more in my aunt's Fiesta than we did in the Juke.

wow - I have to admit - looking at photos just now - it does look smaller inside than the exterior (seen quite a few about) implied !

will go and have a look anyway - as nothing like seeing in person

thanks for replies - very interesting indeed

I owned a Nissan Juke Dig-T (Acenta Premium) for a year and it was a bit of a hoot. I bought it on a whim and loved it for my ownership time.

The handling is more than acceptable, but it's not going to set the world alight. It rolls a little in the corners, but nothing to put you off entirely (unless you are going in looking for Clio Cup handling).

The engine is a bit of a peach, too, the turbo kicks in just before 3,000 rpm (a touch of lag) and then she flies. The performance is very usable and she cruises on the motorway with ease and comfort.

As mentioned by Macca, don't expect to get anyone in the back for too long. The boot is small, but certainly not "tiny".

I averaged 32mpg on my 14,000 miles ownership and this was quite disappointing especially given Nissan's economy ratings of the Dig-T. Even driving conservatively yielded little better.

Go for the Acenta Premium or Tekna trims. The reversing camera, bluetooth and Nav are pretty solid (although the Nav leaves a little to be desired).

I wouldn't consider the Juke Dig-T a warm hatch, something slightly hotter, but if I'm getting picky, it's not "hot hatch" territory either.

When I bought it, it was a unique car and everywhere I drove got me looks. This, however, might not be so true anymore due to the car becoming much, much more popular.

Don't buy white.

My other half has the 1.5 diesel Acenta Sport and she loves it. I'm not such a fan, but as a means to get from A to B it serves a purpose in relative comfort.

The outside is quirky, and in a way I quite like it, but its one of those cars you can never seem to find a good angle to look at it from..there's always something that ruins your view. We had the rear spoiler option fitted which helps improve the look of the rather oddly styled rear end.

The interior is not as big as it looks from the outside. Don't get me wrong it's not exactly cramped, but little things like the bottom of the rear door opening being very small can make it a but trickier than necessary to get in and out. I've heard people complain that the rear headroom is poor but I'm 6'2" and fit in..just.

The interior build quality is certainly nothing to write home about; everything feels quite cheap inside. Also rear visibility isn't great..the rear C pillars are quite large and create big blind spots which make reversing tricky.

If you're going to go anywhere near a motorway or dual carriageway with the car make sure you get one with a 6 speed box. The 5 speed will always have you wishing you'd bought a 6 due to it's short gearing..we found the engine drone very intrusive at motorway cruising speed; that was with the diesel which is quite an agricultural engine, but the petrol is very much the same.

I'm sure there's plenty more I could say about the car but my eyelids are getting heavy :)

To be fair we've had it two months and not once needed anything bigger but we have an umbrella buggy and still takes 8 bags of shopping. Wouldn't like to get a full pram or travel system in there and shopping.

The boot floor comes out and you get the wheel well if you have the foam gunk stuff

I end up getting one every few weeks as a hire car and its ok. 1.6 petrol usually. space wise your civic has a lot more. economy is awful and contrary to what another poster mentioned i don't find it cruises well on motorways (unless you like cruising at 65mph).
negatives aside the steering is very direct and handles nicely. it is fun to drive (if you don't mind the hairdresser stigma!).
certainly worse cars out there but really don't see the point in the 1.6 petrol in such a car.

^^ ha - thanks

interesting thoughts - thanks to all for taking time to reply - much appreciated. May go and have a gander at the local Dig-T one for sale tomorrow. 190hp sounded kinda of fun.

sensible side says something like this is good for the family

heart says FN2 Type-R - just 3 doors puts me off for 2 reasons (1) I'm short (5'4) and 3 doors can be a pain as seat is far forward and (2) the concern ref egress for the kids in back if in the unlikely event of an accident

my personal - current car is a MB6 - which is nice blend of being half quick, handles ok and has 5 doors

Is that the 1.6 petrol turbo you refer to? I've had no experience of the NA version.

Thing is you'll be getting the NA 1.6 which only comes with a 5-speed box. The Dig-T that the OP wants to look at will have a 6-speed, making it much more bearable on the motorway.

Also funny you should mention about it having a hairdresser image, because that's exactly what my. Gf does for a living :)

Have to be honest I quite like them but when we looked at Nissan the Juke was too small for our needs so we got a Qashqai. It's the 1.6 auto Ntec. Mpg is low 30s but to be expected and it's proper slow. Doesn't matter as it hardly ever ventures out of town. The local dealer has a Nismo Juke that looks cool and the turbo engine is supposed to make it quite a laugh.
