Girlfriends ML is up the creek again after 165k miles so needs a change.

Budget is about 22k.
Must be roomy both in the cabin and boot as will be transporting the two of us and our 3 yr old german shepherd :)
She prefers an auto but I would rather have a manual so either.
Mileage is under 10k a year.

Looking at a 10plate 1.6 top spec Qashqai at the moment - any other good alternatives? Even a decent estate?

I had one as a courtesy car about 18 months ago whilst my Accord was being accident repaired, it was a painfully slow petrol engine, awful interior that felt like something out of a cheap Korean hatch back, the gear box was so far from smooth I actually cant think of a word for it but the worst thing of all was the road holding, how does a car thats sat on stilts manage to be harsh and unpredictable and make out that the slightest bump in the road is really a brick wall

I'm sure they're reliable though, personally i'd look for an estate

Bought my mum a year old Qashqai, lovely car for her, hasnt missed a beat.

£22k is steep, can you really justify putting that into a qashqui? id be after a nice estate instead, something new and still in warrenty. youd probably save money, which you could use to justify the fuel cost of a proper engine

I only said 22k because in all honesty it will probably be leased or done on PCP.

We just want something new/nearly new with a nice chunk of warranty on it.

If she likes Nissan and the softroader thing, what about a Murano? Nice engine. Loads and loads of kit.

Might get shot down for this...

But what about a countryman? Styling hasn't quite won me over yet but haven't seen one in the flesh. They look like a nice place to sit in the inside at least. You could get a well kitted out one for your budget.

What about a 12 - 18 month old Mercedes C-Class Estate? or BMW 3 Series Touring?

You should be able to get a C200 CDI or C220 CDI for that price.

Or get a year old fully loaded Skoda Scout 4X4.

Next door have just bought one. I'm going to be honest about it so don't take this the wrong way...

It looks cheap compared to their old 206. It looks badly put together, the bodywork looks thin and the interior is cheap grey plastic. I really think their new car is a downgrade.

Qashqai would be my choice :p

Other alternatives:

Skoda Yeti
Hyundai ix35
Mitsubishi ASX
Subaru Forester and Honda CRV can be had for under 22k i think
Estates -wide rrange of choiced form mainstream brands under 22k

The Qashqai is not all that bad tbh. If you want fairly good fuel econ but keek performance go for the 1.6. If you like to have a bit of go when needed but a bit harder on the juice go for the 2.0. The diesels are allegedly Renault engines so i will let you make you own mind up there;)

I must admit, I'm really liking the extra height and size of my X-Trail over the Fiesta.

Bumpy roads, bad weather, pot holes, speed bumps. Plus its got a solid lined boot (perfect for dogs) and loads of load carrying capacity.

Plus I'm getting 41mpg.

Make sure you get one with plenty of options ticked.

I like them, I had one for a few days last year, I would get the diesel as the petrols lack torque, its ok but I think its well overpriced!
