... it can be used as an optically-triggered slave flash, I gather.

But I'm new to this game, how strong does the on-board flash have to be to trigger the external? The whole point is that I'd be trying to move the source of light, it strikes me as a waste to have both of them going at once...?

...also, I've got the GF1, and I keep hearing things about pre-flash messing up optical slaves, can that be overcome?

Can't answer the first question but about the pre-flash thing.
Quick google says that the Di466 has the slave mode (S1) which ignores the pre-flash so no your camera's on-board flash shouldn't mess up the external flash.

^^ That's right.

I have the GF1 and Nissin Di466 flash (at least until I hopefully sell both this week)! The popup flash on teh GF1 can be set to miimum power and it'll still trigger the Nissin flash at the correct time (and at the correct power).

Handily you'll have notice that the GF1 flash is quite weak anyway, so if you turn it right down you'll hardly ever notice it's fired - but it'll still fire off the Nissin flash.
